Hi,
Here's my quick experience with Magnepans
Living in Mauritius makes it extremely hard to obtain any audio equipment unless you buy only Yamaha or some of the others brands represented localy
(Prices are minimum 2 x when calculating shipping cost+taxes)
So a $650 Magnepan LRS cost me nearly $1560 and a pair of Klipsch RP-160M worth $500-600 in the US would be around $750 to get here.
Any speaker is bought based on online reviews of forum such as AC to have an idea of what to expect in terms of sound. Afterwards, you are stuck with the product
Even at that price, I love the Magnepan LRS and now to a lesser extent the Klipsch(which I've owned for 2 years prior to getting the LRS). Very different sound
Klipsch can play extremely loud and is perfect for action movies and electronic music.
The LRS is just not comparable, you can just close your eyes and feel the band playing in front of you.
And reviewers do not exagerate when mentioning Magnepans require a lot of power.
I have the Yamaha RX-A2050 and AS-500 stereo amp. More than fine for the Klipsch but can barely get the LRS to sing.
Next up- Cambridge Audio Azure 651W is just enough for the LRS with 2 x 150W into 4ohms with low distortion figures.
Best amp i've tried however were a pair of Monoblocks from Hypex NC1200 OEM - up 700W 4ohms for each class D amp. Simply amazing and transparent amplifiers.
Still using the LRS as Stock but considering DIY Stands soon to make them upright and upgrading the crossover network once it's available from GR Research(Already building his upgrades on the Klipsch RP-160M)
List of other equipment:
Magnepan MG12QR in a 2nd system
and Magnepan MMG-W for rear surrounds
