What a difference a room makes
« on: 12 Mar 2005, 07:42 pm »
I'm settled into my new house with my new listening room.    I'm learning that my last room was pretty bad.  I've should have known.  It was something like 14' x 15' with one wall open to the split level above.  Behind the system was a big hollow area under the stairs.  One wall was mostly a sliding glass door.  Ceilings were 8' with beams running across it.

My new room is 12' narrow and 23' deep when listening seat oriented.  The ceiling slopes from 8' on the front wall to 15' on the back.

There is so much more clarity.  Bass is so much cleaner without the huge room mode that I was experienceing at the old house.  Sound is overall less fatiguing.  The sub and volume nob on the Tempest are turned up so much more.  The room sucks up a lot of volume.

I still experience some fatigue when listening to my Odyssey, Cary 303/200, and NHT 2.5i, 2ch system, but I do have a lot of windows in the room and tile under the rug.  Next I'm getting room treatments, and new speakers.

Great idea getting some room treatments. The more you understand about acoustics the better your system will sound.  The cost of the treatment is excellent considerin the improvement gained, far more than cables or electronics. Actually it's no contest.  Congrats on your new house.
