Introduction

Hi, my name is Mike.  I'm an audiophile from the New Orleans area.  I have a tube amp/horn speaker system for jazz and a Odyssey/Spatial Audio system for rock, postrock, shoegaze and ambient music.  I'd like to have a single system for all types of music, but so far I'm better off with a system for each type of music.  I'm presently experimenting with solid state/tube hybrid integrated amps, hoping one of these will allow me to go with a single system for all the music I enjoy.

Are you fortunate enough to have two good listening rooms for your two systems?  I ask because I believe the room is the biggest factor audiophiles neglect.

My opinion, seemingly similar to yours, is that the power amp exist simply to serve the loudspeaker.  My ideal has been to find a loudspeaker that can do all things for all instances.  In 40+ years the best overall loudspeaker I've found has been JBL 708P, a $4000/pair 2-way active monitor.  It uses wave guide (similar to a horn) for the compression tweeter and an 8 inch ported woofer.  It has high output (amps are 250 watts each) and so can fill a large room.
