Confiming DATS numbers on new X-LS Build
« on: 15 Mar 2021, 04:00 pm »
Finished my X-LS build and have about 40 hours on them. Did a DATS sweep on them and just want to confirm what I'm seeing indicates they are correctly constructed. These have all the optional upgrades except the terminals. Thanks in advance for any input.

That looks pretty smooth to me.  :thumb:
If a driver's polarity was accidentally flipped for one driver, there would be a big hole in the response at the crossover point.

Maybe this will be a bit more readable.

Is that a 1db scale?  If so that's incredibly smooth.

Looking at the graph, it seems to measure phase and resistance load across frequencies, not frequency response. But still very consistent graph regardless.

Ah you're right.  Wow, phase looks really good on these speakers.

That is correct Hobbs. Not a frequency response measurement. That is phase at the top. What you see here are the measured electrical parameters of the system. I plan to do some gated FR measurements soon. It's just a pain to drag the speakers into a large enough area (and move cars out of my three-car garage) to get a long enough gate window to cover enough of the frequency range before any reflections happen. We are building a fairly remote house that will have a 20ft drop off our rear deck and from there slopes into a deep valley. I'm interested to see what measurements that will give me on a very calm, quiet day.

I give 100% credit to Peter and his videos. To add, I discovered a couple of best practices for me. It seems important to add two layers of heat glue instead of one. (which is the manufacture's recommendation) Especially if you use anything that is water based on the veneer. I did a pair of Tekton Lores as my first veneer project and had problems keeping bubbles out with only one coat of glue. Also on the Lores I did roundovers like the X. On the lores that radius was tight enough to have the paper backed veneer try to crack. On the XLS I used wood softener on the areas where the roundover is. That solved that problem completely. Made it very pliable.

I've designed a upgrade for that Lore model that really transformed that model.

We discussed that Danny. But the cost for the complete package was more than I wanted to invest in them at this point.

I actually think some of the things you found that needed to be corrected I may have covered with my upgrades in the cabinet construction. The rounded corners, better physical cabinet construction, dampening, etc. If I am correct and some of the upgrade cost you quoted was not just the crossover, I may be interested in buying just the redesigned crossovers from you. If so, please PM me a cost on just those. But the units you see here sound pretty good as-is. At some point I'm going to do some testing and see what the actual output curves look like.

At this rate I'm going drive up to your place with about 6 speakers for you to analyze. Latest being the Active Crossover NX Studio project we discussed on the phone a couple of days ago. Really looking forward to that project.
