I also ran a comparison, very informal, between Tidal and Qobuz. I don't have an MQA capable dac so there wasn't full unfolding of MQA on hi res files, which in the end made my decision to go with Q. I liked the interface on Tidal much better than Qobuz, the sound quality slightly better with Qobuz on redbook, but not something I'd hang my hat on. I figured why pay more for hi res that I wasn't getting on Tidal.
mav - that's interesting about the loudness. I guess I'll have to compare some more files including just CD quality.I also wonder if people hear a difference streaming T or Q using Roon, Audirvana or something else. I have Pure Music for my iTunes library. There is a stream through mode that has not worked well with T, maybe because of MQA.
...the missing albums in Qobuz are higher than the missing albums in Tidal...
Spotify also going hirez "later this year"
There was also a significant difference in sound quality. Q was consistently more detailed. There was better separation of instruments and voices were more fleshed out. Overall, highs were also more present. By comparison music through T seemed slightly more homogenized though in a pleasant, euphonic way. Once heard this difference was present through the entire album.
I started streaming about 2 1 /2 years ago and eventually bought a NAD C658. To begin with I had both Tidal and Qobuz. After a month I dropped Qobuz in favor of Tidal. About a. Month ago I upgraded to a Lumin T2 streamer, wow what a difference. I got another subscription to Qobuz and like it much better now, with the Lumin app it is very easy to compare a MQA to a high resolution song. I’m dropping Tidal.
Lest anyone think that's an absolute, I'll say my experience has been the opposite. It just depends on the music you're after.
