Dr_Jay's NX-Otica + Dual OB Sub Build
« on: 9 Feb 2021, 04:23 am »
Hi all.  Finally pulled the trigger on a pair of Otica's tonight and planning to order dual subs shortly.

I'm new to the GR Research circle specifically but I've messed around on the DIY forums for years, built both speakers and amps, and have had a number of OB designs come through my system.  This is going to be something of a all-out-assault build for me though....I just wish I could fit the NX-Treme's in my room!

System-wise, after years of the gear swapping game I've landed on an all tube set-up, with pretty much a 50/50 split of vinyl to digital...there's just so much good music available to stream I finally had to jump into that pool.  My current power amp is running a quad of KT-150s per channel so I'd like to try something towards the SET / 300B end of the spectrum next.  Always heard good things about the Elekit 8600 but I know they're almost gone....if anyone has suggestions for other good ones please let me know.

Anyway, it sounds like logistics are crazy right now with all the supply chain issues but I'm not in a hurry....really looking forward to getting this started though!

BTW.....I've been aware of GR/Danny Richie for a number of years but more from a crossover design perspective.  Since I've been happy with my current system for a while I hadn't kept up with his OB designs.  I have to plug Ron who I've followed pretty much since he launched New Record Day and all the YouTube vids for getting me off my butt to start this build!

Jay,

I was going to do the duals at first then decided to go with the triples. I heard them when I visited Danny back in December and knew I had to have them. I got the last of the drivers he had in stock. I'm going through the build now. When you get started if you have any questions I will be glad to help. It's all fresh and if I can save you from some of the mistakes I make all the better!

Sounds like we have very similar setups. I'm running all tubes as well. Manley Snappers with 6CA7's, Prima Luna pre-amp with Mullard 5AR4, Telefunken 12AX7, and Phillips JAN 12AT7. Phono stage is a Wright Sounds works with Amperex Bugle Boys. Shelter 501 III MC cartridge, and  Jolida CD with Phillips 12AX7's.

Good luck with your build! It's a lot of fun and the results will be amazing.

Welcome  to AC !
Don't worry about  going with the  NX-Otica's,  with the same quality of network parts,  they are not a compramise when paired with the servo subs.

Lots of experience with both of them,  we've had pairs of each since  the very beginning  of the NX  series.

Jay,

Since you are doing separate sub towers anyway, I'd strongly recommend going with triples instead of duals. The triples don't take up any more floor space, are closer visually to the size of the 'Oticas, and have superior performance. All for the additional price of two woofers, taller cabinets, and a little more wire. The only reason I have duals is my room isn't physically big enough for four cabinets. If it were I'd have the full size NX-Oticas and triple subs.

Dagoods,

Thanks much for the reach out and suggestion on the subs.  My Otica order is in but I specifically hadn't placed the sub order for that reason....and clearly I didn't do enough homework first so appreciate everyone's comments and will definitely go for triples.....what can I say, I'm a hard sell.    My work schedule is crazy right now so I'll check in here whenever I can, and then hit it full speed when all of the components are in.

I'd love to try a pair of the Snapper's sometime.  Currently running the Chinook phono which I've had for years and will probably never part with.  Maybe a pair of the Manley 300B monos one day if I can funnel enough $ into the audio slush fund.....

Good luck with your build as well.

Captainhemo,

Thanks!  The NX-Tremes are some serious audio-porn and I have a history of "overkill" on projects like this so my brain went directly there.....I'm expecting the Otica's to be just as auditory and visually impressive...pressures on me!

mlundy57,

Thanks to you as well for the sub suggestion.....guess I'll need to change the title of this thread already... :)

BTW...the veneer work on your cabinets is gorgeous.  Pretty sure I'm not the first person to tell you that.....something for me to aspire to.

You are going to love the NX-Oticas. They are just about as good as it gets. BTW, Diyaudiostore.com and Tubedepot.com currently have the Lundahl Version of the Elekit TU-8600s in stock.

Thanks for heads up on the Elekit.  Looking into it more I'm thinking about how to work it into my system.  It's got a nice volume control but only one set of single-ended inputs.  I have two sources, currently running into a Primaluna Dialogue Premium pre.  It has a tape out so I could bypass the pre's volume but that's a nice piece of gear to act basically as an expensive switch...lol.   Simple solution....swap the ICs on the input I guess.

Anyway I'm getting off topic here, looks like a top notch kit.
