vandersteen speakers

vandersteen speakers

I have looked and listened to Vandersteen speakers and am interested to know what compares in price and sound to these speakers? Loved the sound. Used speakers in the $5-$10 grand range.

Welcome to AC.

I listened to a pair of large Vandersteens, didn't get model number, in a dealer's showroom just before Covid. I found them overly aggressive and kept turning the volume down, not a good sign. It made wonder if Richard V is personally voicing his speakers.

Welcome!

Opinions of Vandy's vary more widely than most loudspeaker brands.  Their design is based on a more solid principles than nearly any other.  Unfortunately for those of us with lower budgets the company has been forced into moving into the high end.  It appears that the Treo CT is the only one that comfortably fits in your price range.

there have been suggestions that recent vandersteen products are playing with brighter treble than ever... this due to richard v still personally voicing his speakers, and as with most of us, his hearing as he ages is becoming less sensitive to treble

i don't know if this underlying reason is true (many other proven, respected companies feel compelled to produce new products that are more lively in the treble, even stalwarts like harbeth, conrad johnson, spendor etc etc are doing this), but i am not surprised to understand the resultant sonic shift in the newer vandersteen products

i personally still have a set of vandy 3a sigs -- they are still in production but they were introduced in 2006... thus older voicing.  they are very balanced top to bottom imho... and there are controls to be able to mildly adjust the treble and mid response...

Depending on where you live, you could look for a local seller of some used Vandersteen 5as that would fit your price range.  They are full range and have a ton of adjustments for any room.  Just be warned they are 260 pound each but pack a punch and dont need a lot of power.
