Just called J&R, they estimate mid May for JVC receivers. Anyone compare the feature differences between the new models RX-302B vs RX402B vs RX-702B? Any chance these will have pre-outs to run external amps?

Several times I've posted a prooven recipe from a degreed engineer, to obtain a variable line output from a speaker-level source.  Search my member name & "bridging network" or "Jack Elliano".  It costs about $10.  It works even while the speakers are being driven.  You absolutely need no pre-outs for this function, believe me.  It's a time tested recipe.  Funny it's not widely known.  Over the years I've often inquired of people in the industry if such a method exists, yet no answers till I was about 40.

Wow they sure do--yay. I'm glad they're coming out. I've been waiting for some reviews on these before purchasing. But if they're better than the F10, I'm definately in. I just wish they looked as sleek.

Oh, yeah, it'd be great if they came with a free one month mortgage payment too.

C'mon, IMHO, it is getting more than a little spoiled to request fantastic performance, dirt cheap, & great looks too.  Do consumer demands never end?

Only my opinion, it's fine if yours varies.

Hmm, I wonder if the JVC would work with a Mac mini...

I've been thinking about putting together a digital music server with a Mac mini being the centerpiece.   Now I just want a new Samsung DLP set also...

Well, I don't think it's spoiled saying I'd like the new features in last years box. Basically, they upgraded the unit, but then changed the outside looks. I just wondered why they didn't leave the looks the same, since IMO it looked sleeker last year.

But all in all, I really don't care how it looks. I'm much more interested in features and price.

OK, my bad, did not know they had to ruin what was already OK looks.  Of course, the marketing people could never leave the look unchanged when the insides are upgraded.  In defense of the marketing people, if it looks the same, previous owners will think it IS the same.

I agree, the new JVC's look better than most digital-amp receivers, past or present.

Just noticed that the JVC is already showing up on eBay:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39795&item=5771398443&rd=1  Interesting to read their ad (or should I say lies).  They claim "This JVC RX-D201 Silver  Home Theater Receiver has sold in our stores for as much as $270. each!"  Not sure how this could be since it has just come out and MSRP $219.95.  Even Crutchfield has it for just under $200.

Besides performance when stock, I'd like to know about the mod potential of the new JVCs.  I have heard that the older ES1SL had better mod potential than its successor, the F-10, since it had a linear power supply and discrete parts/components.  I'd hope that the new 2xx is a great basis for mods.  I want a JVC digital receiver for my tv room (I think they will pair very nicely to my Acoustic Reality Avinci bookshelf speakers, which are very warm, musical and have solid mid-bass).  Once the verdict is out on the 2xx I'll choose between it and the older ES1SL.  One big plus of the 2xx is that one of its digital inputs is USB, which has little/no jitter compared to coaxial.

Good idea to use the Mac Mini as a music server.

I find it interesting that people pay hard earned money to modify a $200 receiver.  It seems reasonable to guess that $200 street-price 7-channel receivers are engineered & assembled to never be serviced.  Shipping, handling & stocking parts for returns, coupled with insanely low, low production costs ($3 per day Asian wages) & the added expense for removable fasteners, mean that when a unit fails in or out of warranty, it is immediately discarded & replaced.  These pieces are barely worth paying a semi-professional (youngster at the local A-V mart) to diagnose that it is truly broken, much less anything beyond that.  There's a good reason the criminally irresponsible Philips transferred all service to a third party in a foreign country.

It also seems reasonable to assume a $200 receiver is built for low to moderate (at best) longevity.  At this price level, two years later people are interested in newer technology.  They feel like they got their $200 worth of fun already.

So now you gots a $200 receiver, with $X in upgrades.  A year later it breaks & it's trashed.

Just my observation.  It's your money to do with what you like, so enjoy whatever you feel is right.

I had the JVC ESL receiver and it broke after 6 months (an RCA plug broke).  I just brought it back to Costco for a full refund. :D

I only used the receiver as an amplifier for the rear channels of my home theater.  There's no need for an uber expensive amplifier for movie surround channels IMHO.

The one & only good thing that happened (of the many problems) with my Philips SACD 1000 ($2000 MSRP original) was, after it broke the 4th or 5th time, & Philips had no parts (& barely any help at all with their 3rd party Jamaican warranty source), I got a full refund from the Good Guys after using it for close to two years.

My $129 Pioneer Univeral player sounds better, has a better picture, & has been flawless for going on a year of moderate to heavy use.  Ditto my Pioneer Elite RPTV, flawless for about 7 years of moderate to heavy use.

Sucks that the 201 doesn't have 5.1 inputs.... :(
