Pass First Watt F5 Clone
« on: 10 Jan 2021, 04:13 pm »
SOLD Sold sold! Up for sale is my 25 wpc Class A First Watt F5 clone.  It is a typical Rawson build with good quality boards, transformer, connectors and wiring, and a cobbled together (but solid) chassis.  I bought it here a few years ago and it's worked perfectly in regular use since then.  The amp has significant scrapes and scuffs in the silver colored front panel but is 'presentable' and functional.  It has sufficient heat sinking and chassis vents but still runs typically HOT, and I've checked the bias a couple of times over the years and it's correct and steady. Kits have often been available from the diyAudio Store if you are a solder slinger and want something that looks new and attractive... but last time I priced out a complete set up it was around $1200.  This is your golden opportunity to check out a Nelson Pass design with reasonable power (I built a 5 wpc Amp Camp amp and it sounded so good I opted to upgrade to this puppy), so long as you don't mind a scruffy looking exterior. Selling for $525 (Paypal plus fees or FF) plus shipping (will be double boxed) in continental U.S.. No AC power cord unless you want a cheap generic one.

I'm interested in this amp.  I've owned several class A amps, including Forte, Nakamichi PA7 and Bedini amps.  Not sure how this amp compares but I do prefer the sonics of pure class A power.  I live in WI and have a FedEx account to send a prepaid shipping label.  I'm aware of the heat and  don't mind a small space heater in the winter!  Any issues I should be aware of?  Is this amp dead quiet?  I have a pair of Spendor SP1 and vintage Klipsch speakers.  What preamp would you recommend as a good match?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Happy to accept your FexEx account prepaid label.  No issues encountered since I've owned the amp.  It is quiet mechanically (no transformer hum) and acoustically (no hiss or buzzing) with my speakers (which are much lower sensitivity than your Klispch).  I've been using a tubed Aikido with it that works beautifully, but any decent preamp (SS or tube) should work like a champ.  It doesn't have as much gain as some amps so an active pre works better than a passive (although it sounds fine with a passive... it just loses some dynamics).  Any other questions, lemme know.

Neil

PM received, however I have also received a much more realistic offer.  Since you were the first to express an interest I will give it 24 hours to see if you want to update your offer to be more competitive.
