Introduction old newbie
« on: 7 Jan 2021, 06:00 am »
Hi Gang.  I'm happy to join audio circle.  I started this hobby in '83.  I do still have the Bryston 4b which I bought used then.  I'm interested in great sound for reasonable cost.  I have a simple system mixing old and new best value gear.   Laptop-jriver-schiit mimby dac -schiit saga pre-VTV Purifi amp, B&W DM6 speakers(state of the art from 1976).

Most recent upgrade was the vtv amp, which I really like.  The bryston probably needs a refurbishment after an estimated 40 years of trouble free service.

Any opinions on next upgrades would be appreciated.

More questions for sage members.  I'm quite interested in building speakers.  I'm an amateur furniturebuilder, so the boxes are in my wheelhouse, but the design and testing is not.   I'm most interested in a 3 way tower, with one or two  8" woofers.  I'm interested in great sounding gear, not the most analytical nor the loudest, nor most efficient.   Suggestions?

Welcome!

There's so much more to good loudspeakers than the cabinets.  For instance read about the Buchardt A500 or even Neumann KH120.  Active designs are the way to go.  Wave guides are very popular.  Also suggest reading Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" to learn how loudspeakers/subwoofers behave in-room, the inherent severe bass peaks/dips, and how properly setup multiple subwoofers can help address the issue.

Save your cabinet building skills for furniture or maybe subwoofers.
