A buddy of mine is over in Holland as his daughter wants a turntable.
Any thoughts on the Technics SL-1700?  He says there are quite a few there.
His budget with table and cartridge is around 400 Euros.

I don't know anything about Technics turntables so although he's not wedded to the idea of a Technics, there's just a lot of them around in that price range.

Both the SL-1700 and SL-1700 MkII are excellent turntables. If properly maintained, it should provide years of trouble free service. I know purists don't like the auto features, but I personally won't have a deck without auto-return. Most of those '80's DD turntables have excellent drive systems, but cheap plinths.  If you can easily remove the case, take $10 worth of Plasti-Clay on to every available space.  It will really solidify the base.

Now he's looking at speakers.
If he was in the US I'd say Magnepan LRS would be the best bang for the buck but in Holland they're probably really expensive.
I sold my old 1.6s to a fellow in Norway, I think it was, and he was so happy.  He wrote back how he had the only pair the country.

The HW-19 I bought from John The Chair Guy still has his PlastiClay stuck to the underside of the plinth!

Yeah, John TCG was a guru to many of use getting back into vinyl.  I'm indebted to that guy and miss him.  My JVC QL-F6 is a clone of his work on his (filled with Plasti Clay).  Although it sits in the closet now, it honestly holds it own pretty well against some much more ballyhoo'ed units currently in my system.

I think a Technics DD is a great option for a person getting into the hobby or that wants a no fuss way to listen to records.

I moved my old 1200 Mk2 into my kids room and hooked them to some old ADS bookshelf speakers. System sounds great!

I used to have a SL1700 back in 1978, the cueing messed up too easily, otherwise a OK turntable.
