The new CEC TL-51 belt drive is supposed to nice, but it's $1200.  Many manufacturers, including Ack use CEC belt drives in product development.

I don't buy into the whole belt drive transport idea, but then I haven't heard one directly compared.  I have heard the April Stello one and it was fantastic and a good price.   The CDpro Kit is nice if you can DIY.

Has any one actually heard the New CEC TL-51. I have seen a ton of discussion on all the boards, but have not talked to anyone who as actually heard it

I have a Pioneer DV 47a.  Would it be a good idea to get a transport mod?

The stello transport is about a grand, maybe 1100.  tvyankee told me a while back.

Have you guys come across good reviews on the Stello transport?

I am planning on separating my audio and video systems, which would allow me to run a dedicated cd transport... the Stello and the CEC are on my list...

Josh, any idea how the Stello compared with more expensive transports or modded players?

Thanks,

- Jay

Another transport option would be having Steve Nugent at Empirical Audio mod a used Sony S7700.  Many glowing reviews around here and on his site.  A used S7700 can be had for around $200 and the mods run $500 - $1300.  Sony stopped building the S7700 about 5 years ago, so the supply is starting to dry up, but they're uniquely designed (see EA site) and well built (as Sony's first flagship DVD player).

Jay...tvyankee brought his Stello transport (and DAC, for that matter) to our Holiday Rave in December.  I thought the Stello transport performed quite well, although the listening conditions weren't ideal (ie. people drinking beer and talking).  Had a nice balance to the tone as well as good dynamics.  Wasn't able to tell if it was as refined/sophisticated as the EA S7700, but many people initially reacted saying it was better (they and I thought this initially about the CD-PRO2M kit too, but on further listening outside of the Rave, a couple of us felt that the EA S7700 was definitely more sophisticated and listenable than the kit...maybe that would be the case with the Stello as well)

Yes, we need to do another comparison with the Stello....but the EA modded 7700 is excellent , my reference as well. :)

Phil,

Thanks for that.  I did re-read the writeups from the December rave and did see that some thought the Stello was better.  As you say, it probably deserves a follow-up comparison.  But, my take away is that if you want a brand new transport that is in the same performance ballpark as the EA 7700 for ~$1100 (which is nice achievement!), then the Stello is a great choice.

I have found that the Stello is available in Hong Kong, which is a nice plus for me since I expect that it would cost me ~$150-$200 to ship a player from the U.S. to HK.

Regards,

- Jay

Extremely well built, does DVDs also! (so you can do analog out for the movies and digital out for the music).  My advice is then to couple to your DAC with a Monarchy Audio DIP.  In fact I recommend this with any transport you buy.  A friend of mine had one of the expensive C.E.C belt drive transports and he was shocked to hear how much of an improvement this low cost jitter box made.

But was your friend using his C.E.C. transport with a dAck?  Chris Own said in the thread announcing the dAck 2.0 that with a great transport like the C.E.C., using the Monarchy unit--which normally improves the sound--was actually detrimental when used with the dAck.

Here's a link to that thread: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=15964

hello jay

the transport is $1350.00 retail.the price went up over the new year because of the falling dollar and the rising cost of metal.

it is a great transport that is built very well and sounds good too.

and the looks are very nice as well.it come in a what they call a olive blk or a silver.good luck on your search.

The DV-47A makes an excellent transport, just like a modded Sony DVP-S7700.  It needs a Superclock in addition to the other mods to compete with the Sony.

Is the DV-47A considered a "turbo-mod"?
