Wayne, how do the studios make money with a plan like that?

Volume! And pricing. HBO Max no longer has a free trial, $14.95 a month for a subscription although you can cancel anytime but with all the first run movies arriving more than once a month nobody is going to cancel. It's going to take a long time to vaccinate 331 million people (twice) in order to get theaters to fully open again. Studios typically keep 80 percent of premium on-demand revenue, while ticket sales from theatrical releases are split roughly 50-50 between studios and theaters. If HBO Max can get close to Netflix's subscriber level they will have made a golden goose.

"AT&T, which owns WarnerMedia, also has made it clear that Mr. Kilar’s top priority is building HBO Max into a full-fledged competitor to Netflix, which has 73 million subscribers in the United States and almost 200 million worldwide. HBO subscribers hit a record 38 million at the end of September, but only about 8.6 million subscribers had activated HBO Max."
