Hi from N. Tahoe....
« on: 4 Dec 2020, 06:23 am »
I’ve been out of the hobby for quite awhile.... mostly enjoying my SET amp being fed by a steady diet of vinyl and a Mac mini based digital side.  The Mac mini bit the dust and now I am trying to figure out what to replace it with.  Many more choices than 8+ years ago!  Anyhow, looking forward to seeing what is trending these days :)

Welcome to A/C. I'm sorry I don't have any suggestion as my 10-year-old Mac Mini is still running.

Welcome!  Lots of choices, depending of course on your budget and preferences.  For example, if you're looking to run something super reasonable running something like JRiver, you can get a Windows 10 mini PC for around $150, plus the ($60) cost of JRiver and hard drives to store music files (and of course a monitor to start up the program).  If you have a bigger budget, there are a host of music servers/streamers either stand alone (assuming you're content with the rest of your system) or combined with a DAC and/or a preamp.

Something to look at. A dedicated computer with most crap stripped out. Run an external hard drive (make back-ups!). Put a remote mouse on it, add an iPad or your phone and you can control JRiver from your chair.

I currently have a Benchmark DAC2 L which doubles as my preamp.  With the rest of my family being Spotify junkies, I am really intrigued with the newer generation of streaming DAC/Preamps like the Mytek Brooklyn Bridge or the Matrix Audio Element X.  Are there others I should think about?  I like the idea of less boxes in the system.  I would sell my Benchmark to keep the wife happy, 1 toy in = 1 toy out :).

There's a ton of products out there.  Depends as noted on your budget and the rest of the stuff.  Bryston just released the BR-20.  In a secondary (due to limited the box count), I have Hegel H190 (they have other models) but that is an integrated amp too.  Cambridge Audio has products as well as Channel Islands Audio, Cocktail Audio, Project Audio and tons of others.

If you are looking at all in one DAC/streamers I would stick with one of the established brands like Lumin or Auralic as they have been in the market a long time and have large support networks.  They both have also developed and maintain their own software rather than rely on third party software as many of the upstarts in the market do.  In those situations you are at the mercy of those software companies when there is a problem that the hardware supplier can't fix.  A lot of these companies rely on mControl by Conversdigital as their streaming software and it is notorious for issues.  Aurender also falls in the group with Lumin and Auralic but it's pricing for that type of product starts at a higher level.

There's an Auralic Aries Mini on AC now at a great deal.

Great point on the software part of the equation.  I've been so deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem (with my music, work, phone etc)  that I forget about other software user experiences out side of that ecosystem.... which is also far from perfect.  In the end, it just needs to be somewhat easy for the wife to navigate and find our digital music and for my daughters to stream their Spotify playlists since they are remote learning for college these days.  I'll definitely dig into the companies you suggested!

The Aries Mini is a great little streamer and mine is still going strong in a secondary system five years later.  The problem with it for someone new into streaming is that it is a discontinued product for several years and the internal DAC is it's weak point.  Even still it will run circles around the Node 2Ci. In the price range of the two devices the OP mentioned I would look at the G1 Altair or the Lumin D2.  Another alternative is the Teac NT-505 which is basically a Lumin streamer combined with a Teac DAC. Great sounding piece that operates on the Lumin software.  Both the Lumin and Auralic software are best in and were developed for use with IOS. iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

For years I used a pair of Cain and Cain Super Abbys from Terry Cain (which I just put up for sale on Trading Post).  I loved those speakers, especially with John Hogans 300b SETs.  More recently I have my Fi 2a3's hooked up to a pair of Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekends... which I am very tempted to trade up to the Soul Supremes.  I know the "Zu sound" isn't for everyone, but I find it pretty engaging and definitely fun.  With my musical tastes trending to more bass heavy music lately... I might need to get a sub too.   This hobby never ends....

Or if you prefer, like many do, to use an external DAC , the Aries mini is top notch.

Never used the internal DAC except in it's initial shootout with the Node 2 five years ago.  As a stand alone streamer a great little piece and so good that Auralic had to discontinue it as people were stopping there and not moving up the line plus parts costs kept climbing.

Not sure of your budget ?
But this Modwright Modified Cambridge Audio Streaming DAC looks to be getting noticed by some heavy hitters..
I have a Oppo 205 modded by modwright  that I have been happy with..

I recommend the Node 2i with an external DAC. I tried an Aries and owned a Lumin for a while, but I found the Node to be the most user friendly and reliable.
