Phono cable ground wire question
« on: 27 Nov 2020, 03:40 am »
I have a DIN to RCA phono cable that goes from the turntable to a phono stage. There are two ground spades at the RCA end of the cable. The phono stage (Graham Slee Accession MC) is sitting on the pre amp, close enough so that one ground spade could go to both the amp and phono stage. Is it ok to do this or should both spades just go to the phono stage? Also not sure if it would be better to get the pre amp and phono stage further apart.

Avoid ground loops. so the ground wires to just the phono box.
The distance can become an experiment. Try the phono where it is. note the level of hiss from speaker with equipment on selected phono. Get right up to the speaker. How much hiss. Perhaps have an assistant move the phono box further away.. Less hiss? move the phono box closer more hiss no change?  Even moving the just the cables a bit . note if more or less hiss. Experiment done you will actually know for your system whether it matters. Good lick.

Just a point of clarification... grounding issues affect the level of hum, the amount of hiss is more dependent upon the S/N level of the electronics particularly from residual noise in the phono stage.

If you don't have any hum issues, then I wouldn't worry. First, crank up the volume without anything playing then listen for any hum. If there is none, then you are good. If you notice hum, try different grounding wire configurations and/or move equipment around per Elizabeth's suggestions and listen for lowest hum levels.
