Is there more involved in just changing the power supply for a BP25->26 upgrade?

When I took the MPS1 to my dealer, i noticed it wouldn't fit into the back of the BP26.

Therefore, would the MPS2 be plug-n-play into the BP25?? Or are there internal changes or an adaptor?

Hi Yogus.
The pre-amp internals are the same. You should tell them when you order the power supply that you plan to connect it to the bp-25, so they'll send you the correct adapter.

If you do it please share your impressions with us.

HI,

Yes the connector is different on the MPS2 and the BP26. So if you want to use an MPS2 you must tell us so we can have the proper connector for you at the BP25 end.
The MPS2's larger connector also allows us to run a separate power line to the DAC if one is installed.

Yogus,

If you do not mind me asking where did you see the new BP26?

I heard it at Electronics Enterprises in Sydney, Australia. The sales guys there are great!!

I heard it with a pair of 7BSSTs into PMC OB1s.

Very impressive, but obviously I couldn't hear the difference between a BP25 and 26 due to connectivity issues  :?

James,

Can you confirm if people are able to contact Bryston to upgrade BP20/25 to BP26 (i.e. new fascia and MPS2)?

I can confirm the people at EE are great...this is not a plug since I can list many other great shops and people...it's just that the guys went that extra mile which is always nice and good service should be ackowledged.

For example, they don't normally carry PMC but after suggeting it, they now have stock !! That's service ;-)

We are selling MPS-2 power supplies on thier own  (quite a few actually)  at this point for customers to connect to their BP20's or 25's. The MPS-2 is available through dealers.

We may at some point offer a cosmetic upgrade for the BP 25 at a later time. We can not do it now because we need all the metal work we can get for production.

The BP26 has been a huge hit - nice to see stereo strong in this world of surround.

James, what feedback have you had thus far about the upgrade? Are people hearing a material improvement in performance? Is anybody planning on doing a formal review?

Have a review coming from Inner Ear Report - a Canadian magazine in about a month.
He is very familiar with Bryston and the BP25. I have not read the review - not allowed you know - but he tells me he is knocked-out and wants one for himself.
Also Stereophile wants one when they are available - problem is it usually takes them about 6 months to get it to press.

James... we are out there... I have surround for movies, but have ditched DVD AUDIO & SACD in the listening room... the mixes in general are too gimmicky.
2 CHANNEL IS AOK BY MY EARS...

HI BackToRock,

I think one of the tragic issues with stereo is that most people do not realise how involving a great stereo set up correctly can sound. The ability to place instruments and voices in a 3-demensional soundstage is exceptional if done right.
I agree that many of the surround mixes today are designed to sell the 'idea' and not the experience of reality.

I agree,

I enjoy the surround experience for Home Theater. I was initially enamoured with DVD-Audio and SACD. But for realism, I just could not beat the 2-channel experience

I have to agree that DVD-Audio and SACD tend not to be very sensibly mixed. The way they ought to work is to give you a nice 3-channel soundstage across the front while the rear speakers just fill in the acoustics of the concert hall. Instead they tend to put the listener in the middle of the orchestra, which is just silly.

Having said that, the real advantage high-definition audio formats ought to have is one of sound quality rather than number of channels. Something that's 24-bit and 192kHz ought to sound far better than something that's 16-bit and 44.1kHz. But too many high-def recordings seem to be far more interested in the number of channels than they are in the quality of the recording.

Does the new BP26 volume control have a light on it or any more visible way to see where the volume is set?  I know it doesn't have a digital readout.
Also, how much does the MM/MC option add to the cost of the BP26?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Sorry no light.
The MM Phono is an additional $400 US and the MM/MC combination add $1000 US

James,

When upgrading to the D/A option with an MPS2 on the BP-25, can the BP-25 be configured so that it can use the separate power feed of the MPS2 for the DAC portion of the BP-25DA ?

Thanks.

Hi Jethro,

No the BP25 does not have the circuitry for the independent DAC feed if used with the MPS-2.

James

I think this may have been asked before, but would an upgraded BP25 with MPS2 (but no DAC) sound identical to a BP26? Are there any other non-sonic differences besides cosmetics?

Also, given that the DAC has its own P/S feed, would the BP25DA be inferior to the BP26DA?

Hi Yogus,

Yes the BP25 would sound identical with the MPS2 supply to a BP26.

The DAC takes a large amount of current so there is an advantage to the separate feed on the BP26.
