On the Rocks has many layers. Layer one is Bill Murray playing an off beat, globe trotting, impulsive dad giving marriage advise to his daughter played by Rashida Jones. The second layer is about relationships and communication. The third layer is the set design.

Producer, writer and director Sofia Coppola has an eye for details, people very familiar with New York City will have fun figuring out locations. Fine expensive artwork is always in the background, art aficionados can try to identify the paintings, luckily the film credits has a list. I'm sure expensive understated women's fashion is worn but I'm clueless and there is also a scene with wrist watches that eludes me since I am not into fine watches either.

The film style is similar to Cary Grant films which were both serious and fun at the same time. On the Rocks is both and one of the best feel good films of 2020. Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and the rest of the cast are in fine form, casual acting at it's finest.
