Getting back to audio in San Diego
« on: 10 Nov 2020, 08:17 pm »
Hi:
I have recently retired and have been in the basement sorting through the stuff that accumulates in basements when one is working too hard.  In my case this includes:
SOTA sapphire turntable with Premier PIB-1 arm and several cartridges (Ortofon SE 15F Mk II in tonearm). Still works, and suspension looks ok.
DENON HA 1000 head amp
Audio Research SP9 preamp
Aragon 4004 amp (early model)
Theta DS Pro DAC
Marantz model fifteen dual monoblock amps (60w/side @8 ohms), >50 years old, have replaced 2 of 4 main caps
Magnapan MG-.5QR speakers
KLH-6 speakers (>40 years old)
LS3/5A speakers (still in use)
Sony CX70ES 200 disk CD player

Used at my desk: REGA bookshelve speakers with Peachtree NOVA integrated amp.

My goal is to add a stereo system to the living room which is 17*23*8.5 with one of the sides mostly open to stairs and a larger hall.  Speaker to listener distance around 15'
I think this will be mostly for listening to streaming music.  Looking at electronics, it seems like the NAD M33 has features that would be easy to use when the kids come over, or I just want to enjoy music watching the fireplace or the sunset.  The LS3/5A are not big enough to fill the room, and I would like to have good low end, maybe down to 20Hz as I enjoy string base, and the impact of drums.  The maggies also do not go down low enough, and will need some attention to some loose wires to bring them back to what they were and I suspect the room is too large to work well.

I have moderate hearing loss, use hearing aids, so the fine points of audiophile listening may be only in my past.

Music tastes are opera, jazz, acoustic, older rock, female voice

So, Hello All!

Looking for advice on what kind of speakers, towers most likely, would be good for this size space.   After I get this set up, then I will redo the home theater room (17*17*8) and probably install the turntable there so I can do both video and stereo listening.
