I know a good number of you are using OBs, with the Eminence 15" drivers, driven by their own dedicated amps. Can I take a consensus on what amps you have found to be successful.

I am thinking about:
1. SLAM
2. LOW END EXTENSION
3. SUFFICIENT VOLUME
4. SOUND QUALITY
5. OVERALL CONTROL OF THE BIG DRIVER

It would also be nice to hear of any amps you tried that did not pass muster in your system.

In the absence of any other contributions, I have looked at the XLS 1502. The specs look good, but just how noisy is the fan, and how does it marry up to my five criteria?

IMO/E it does all 5 very well.
The only time I heard the fan was in a spare bedroom setup used for nearfield - low volume listening where the equipment rack was 2 feet behind me. In my main system where the equipment is near the speakers I never heard the fan.

IMO with the hi sensitivity Eminênce Woofers you could remove the Crown top cover and turn off the fan.

Would be nice to know if the fan is on all the time or if it comes on when the amp gets hot.

Unlike home units, the XLS 1502 has a built-in fan with tons of holes for ventilation as you see. Fortunately it is temperature controlled and barely came on during my nearly 50 watt soak time. And when it came on, it was very quiet.

I use a pair of Alpha15a in a U-Baffles  (Martin King recipe). Their weakest feature i.m.h.o. would be they have less slam than many modern polypropylene drivers in conventional boxes. I prefer them to "normal" speakers because they have such a big natural sound and plenty of it. They go plenty low - mid thirties and can be nimble and quick. Try 'em !

For two Alphas in H-frames I use a single 100 watt Yung plate amp.

For four on flat baffles connected in parallel I use a Behringer active and a TPA3116 stereo amp.

The Alphas are efficient and don't need gobs of power.
