Chaps,

I am putting together a new, or call it upgraded, 2-channel audio system. In my previous systems I always had full function pre-amps.

My current system comprises a tube power amp and a CD player linked to an inexpensive Schiit Sys volume control with a 2-input switch. Now I want to add my turntable. To do that I need a tube MM/MC phono stage.

My question is, will I be better off sonically with this configuration or just eliminate the Schiit and purchase a full function preamp? I use only two sources, that's it, I do not need balance or tape features.

I already have an excellent tube phono stage in mind.

Cheers,

Well since you already have your phono-pre figured out go for a nice line stage and call it a day ! I'm using an ARC LS-28 and couldn't be happier .........

I disagree.  I say yes all you need is a phono preamp.  Get the Schiit Mani and connect its line out to one of the Sys' line inputs and voila!  And for just $129!  And if you go for the Sol at $799 you'll just get better SQ and resolution.  Hopefully some who have tasted either of these combos will join in.

Pretty tough to find a quality full function preamp these days with a quality built-in phono stage.  Which ones are you looking at?

Many integrateds have phono, but mainly as an after-thought trying to be all things to all people.  By that I mean it's usually a cheap module with only passable SQ.

Separate phono stage is a solid legit way to go.  Keeping it separate from line stage gives flexibility and the ability to change / upgrade each piece independently.

Handmade with or without phono pre.
Other options available.

Thanks guys.  Bad word choice on my part.  Sure there are some.  I meant to say that options are limited compared to the old days when TT reigned supreme and basically every receiver / preamp / integrated had phono built in.

And when you narrow it down further to high quality built-in phono, the options are even more limited.

I am looking at several Uesugi preamps.

Not well known outside Japan, Uesugi Brothers have a cult following in Japan for their electronics. The ‘brothers’ were instrumental in running tests on lot of famous Japanese Hi-fi exotica while being employed at Stereo Sound magazine in Japan. The brothers were some of the founders of the Japanese hifi we know today. Their designs sat on the shelf to inspire Shindo while he was developing his own work.

This ultra-minimalist preamplifiers are said to have been custom-built for discerning Japanese audiophile. Hand built by the ‘brothers' with point to point wiring, premium grade components and a now extinct Tango transformer.

My amp is a Berning ZH-230.

A quick look around the internet, shows that you have a good power amp there. Why handicap it with a substandard pre-amp, look for something that can realise it’s potential. I can only imagine that the Schiit volume control thing you have there has been holding back the system.

You have already spend the money on the power amp, so go all the way and get a good pre-amp and throw in a good phonostage too.

You beat me to the punch, but I had the exact same thought when I saw the excellent amp in use.

The reason I bought the Schiit was that I did not have a turntable, I sold my Technics SP15 and had to wait until my Garrard 401 arrived from the UK, then wait for the plinth and the rebuild of my SME 3009, also from the UK. Then I had to wait for the plinth to be lacquered by a friend. Since I did not have a preamp I bought the Schiit just to listen to something. I am still waiting for hardware to mount the 401.

Some Uesugis come with MM/MC phono stages.
