Encore XLS - Tube amps
« on: 22 Sep 2020, 04:33 am »
Hi everyone,
I was wondering what is the minimum power requirements for tube amps with the encores?

As DIY has taken off with COVID and there are alot of encore kits shipping from Danny I thought what recommendations are there as a great match for the encores. This could help anyone in the market for a tube amp and could be good idea as a knowledge base for the future. (I am saving pennies at the moment so it is a distant future for me  )

Recommendations please.
Cheers

Here's my old X-LS driven by my home made 18 watt monoblocks.  It can get pretty loud before it runs out of gas.

Of course more power is better.  :icon_twisted:
Here they're being driven by my custom 140 watt monoblocks.

Hey Corndog, thanks for sharing and very 8). I just watched both videos and am really impressed. The open baffle subs with the encores seem like a great setup.

Anyone else want to add to the recommendations.

I’ve heard X-LS Encores with a few different tube amps including a 1.5wpc SET amp, 5, 15, 35, and 70wpc amps. From my experience, I’d say 15wpc would be the minimum.

Thanks Mike

I had heard that 5 to 10w per channel tube amps needed pairing with 88db and up sensitivity speakers to perform well. Also that most bookshelf speakers need more power from tube amps. 15W per channel will be the starting point then. :)

Currently running some stock x-ls with 40w tubes and I can get no where near "12 O'clock" on the volume, with out thinking about my lease and my neighbors.  (Room is large open with about 20 x 30 feet only 8ft ceilings however  )

45w like this would work great https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery;area=browse;album=3365  Ping me for more information as I've been trying to sell it.

I've been looking into building a tube amp soon to be used with my encores and have narrowed it down to two possibilities. One is 8wpc the other is 12wpc. Based on what you've heard, would you advise against this? Was the 5wpc amp you heard really that bad? Do you happen to know the sensitivity of the encores? I haven't found this anywhere.

Cheers,
Sparkey

Thanks for the advice. It seems 20 to 40 watts are the recommendations. Great info for us tube newbies. :)

I am running a pair of X-LS connected to a 50watt EL34 amp and they sound great.
They clearly don't need 50w power, as I've coupled them to DIY TPA3110 and 3115 amps with good results.

I'll bet they would...they sound great my C-J LP70S (70 Wpc); I'm using KT120s in this amp, BTW, not the stock 6550s.

I think they'd sound great with these 50 watt Wavac SET monos, but they should as these amps are about $30,000/pair.

One of the best amps I've EVER heard, BTW, and that includes Technical Brain and TAD.

This is great guys. I think we are seeing a trend of 15W and up per channel. Anyone else want to put up their amps or DIY or Non DIY suggestions?

I have the VTA ST-70 tube amp that I built. It's an upgraded version of the dynaco 70 amp that was sold years ago. Using it to drive JBL 590 speakers.

Great amp. I've had one for years. ( 12AT7 version with Russian PIO caps))  Punches WAY above its price point.  Just choose very good driver and output tubes and you're good to go.

Honestly, you’re really not missing much.  I started with an ST70 which was great.  I traded it for a pair of X-Omnis because I had already built a pair of MK 4’s which were also great.  Then I built a VTA ST120 and loved that.  Was it noticeably better?  Not really.  Nor were the VTA M-125’s that I eventually built although they definitely woke up my less sensitive speakers.
The VTA amps are all great.  I mean are 6550 / KT88 tubes sexier than EL34’s?  My girlfriend thinks so which I thought was funny.

If you want to take the path I took then go for it.  I thought more power would be better but it was really only better for my least sensitive and very power hungry speakers.  Since I sold those and now have 97dB speakers I really don’t need all of the power.  Unless of course I can get a bigger listening room.   Still, if I had to start over an ST70 would work perfectly well for me.

For the VTA ST-70, I think going with the octal input tubes is a nice upgrade. I like the sound of those tubes better. Here is a pic of my ST-70, built about 6 years ago ( not by me ).

I was thinking the 120 would make my jbl's a bit more crisper or punchyier. I also thought about trying to upgrade the cross overs, but when I contacted GR Research he said there was not enough room to build a new ones inside??????. This kind of baffles me since they are 4 feet tall and I already took a driver out to peek at what the crossover looked it inside. I found a schematic online and have begun writing down part numbers per the diagram.
The x-over inside is about 6x4 inches full of cheap parts. But since I know nothing about building one, I am not sure this would be a good route. Or maybe just build some new speakers.  I mostly listen to 80's-90's music with some easier stuff thrown in here and there.

The main problem I have is... I want something with a bit more depth when listening at low volumes and would like to add a Sub to my system without having to move over to a sand amp. I love the tube amp sound. A 2.1 setup would be ideal I think. I do not own a TV so 5.1 and all that has no appeal to me.

Anyway, I'm just here trying to learn more about the hobby.

Thanks for the replies both of you !!!
