set 120 - height specs and power into 4 ohms?
« on: 13 Sep 2020, 06:36 pm »
I sent an email and used the website contact form a week or so ago and haven’t heard back, so figured I’d try here for a response.

The height spec online shows 3.5 inches, which I’m assuming does not include feet. Does someone out there mind taking as accurate of measurement from absolute bottom of feet to top of chassis? The set 120 would need to slide into this shelving rack thing that I have as part of my audio and entertainment system, so just hoping it will fit and clear the front lip of the shelf.

second, I’m assuming it plays into 4 ohms nicely? My speakers are 4 ohm but decently efficient at 90db, but since there is not listed spec online, I just wanted to make sure and confirm what kind of power output is into 4 ohms.

Yup, I did call as well, no response. It’s reasonable to try email and using a websites contact form, give it a 2 week window for response, and if not, to try posting here, no?

It's 4 inches with the feet on. Faceplate is 3.5 inches tall and the case behind it is about 3 1/4" tall. You can remove them with a screwdriver and put contact paper on the shelf. I wouldn't worry about loudness, the 120 will be plenty loud with those speakers.

Thank you! It appears the amp will slide perfectly in. Appreciate taking the time. And it’s good to know that if needed I could unscrew face plate if I needed the clearance (the shelf has a front lip so once amp clears I could just screw faceplate back on, but won’t need to based on your measurements).

Thanks for confirmation on 4 ohms - I wonder though if power doubles into 4 ohms (so 120w?)...

Generally AVA amps do double power in 4ohms but you may have already seen on his website that he simply says "much more".

Appreciate it! One last question (as it’s clear you know these amps well and I appreciate the helpfulness) - about how many watts you think does the amp output in class A?

IIRC, Frank said for the 225W SET 400, he says 8-10 watts so I would assume 3-4 watts? That's actually quite loud without the peaks, if you know how power to speakers work.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time. If we’re calling this 90db at 1 watt, that would be 93db at 2 watts and 96db at 4 watts, of which all would most likely still be within class a (and deafening loud lol). I know those figures are at 1 meter away, but my room and listening distance isn’t that big in the first place (typical family room setup, with a listening position maybe 2ish meters away and plenty of boundary reinforcement and room gain.

I’m pretty much sold and I’m excited at it will gel with my rig:

Technics 1200gr - Lyra Delos - pass aleph ono - wyred4sound mPre - current diy amp using class d audio sds254 modules - Audio physic Virgo iii

If it helps, I have a pair of JBL LSR32s (93db into 4 ohms, -20db at 20 hz) and AVA's amps have never blinked. I made them go loud enough to fill a "lively" 5000ish sq ft room (no carpets). Now these were bigger amps, hybrids, and things were done (double-die upgrade), but they were not required for normal operation, just surprising upticks on SQ instead.

I also matched them up to good effect with the 30ish watts of the UltraValve.

So I just assume that fewer watts do not change the basic attitude that low impedance shall not be an obstacle over at AVA. Nonetheless, (a) 30-day no hassle return, (b) if you do encounter a reasonable limitation to this amp like the one you're describing, you will probably be "the first house on that block".

You might consider paying a little extra and getting one with a volume knob, 'cause you never know...

For anyone interested, I have a like new SET 120 amplifier available at a $100 discount.

It went to a client who liked it so much that he traded up to the Control Amp version.

I have only had the SET 120 back here a few days.  It has our full 3 year parts and labor warranty and satisfaction guarantee of course.

Let me know if you want it.
