Vision SET 400 current capacity ?
« on: 4 Sep 2020, 09:07 pm »
Curious if anyone ( Frank ? ) knows what the current capacity amperage is for the SET 400 ?
SET 120 ?

I’m looking for another amp and am curious as to how it compares to my Parasound A21’s 60 amperes per channel , and my old B&K ex-442’s 75 amperes.

Thank you

Hi BK, I have a Parasound A21 and a Pass  Labs X250.  I also wrote a review on the SET 400 for Frank.  I can tell you that the SET 400 sounds way better than the A21.  It is more musical with more detail and transparency.  Its midrange is way better than the A21. The SET drove my Magnepan 1.6 speakers to loud levels without flinching.  It is more liquid and smoother sounding with a bit more warmth.

The A21 puts out 60 peak amps, way more than my Pass amp but the Pass is way more dynamic with thunderous bass.  It also plays louder without breaking up.

I can't tell you the peak amps of the SET 400 but maybe Frank can.  Send him and email or give him a call.

 Best Regards,

Larry

If Frank is home, he or Mary will answer his phone.  You can also email him.

First of all, if you have specific questions for me, its best if you email me at frank@avahifi.com.  I do not check my Audiocircle mail every day.

Regarding current capacitor of the SET 400, each channel has four double die 20 amp, 200V, 200W rated Exicon power mosfets, plus two more big Exicon devices per channel used as regulators.  The maximum recommended speaker fuses are 8 amp quick blow types that support full power (225W/Ch into 8 ohms, about double that into 4 ohms).  Bigger fuses equals blown speakers saving the cost of replacing fuses.

An interesting fact regarding the regulators is that at low output power there is high voltage across the regulators, but low current so very safe operation, and very high power there is low voltage across the regulators, but high current, and still very safe operation. Pretty fool proof operation.

Some other companies might just add up the current rating of all their output devices and tell you 20 x 8 equals 160 amp current rating.  That is BS.

In other words, the SET 400 will drive cleanly your system as loud as you desire, short of breaking windows and eardrums.

I would love to see a demo of it putting out 160 amps for, say, a minute. From behind a thick plexiglass shield, with the fire department on hand. Youtube gold!

I remember going to a open market in Tucson decades ago and seeing those boom boxes with stickers on them saying that they had 200 watts of power! :duh:
