A Man Escaped is directed by Robert Bresson. Filmed in Bresson's minimalist style the story centers on Fontaine (François Leterrier), a member of the French Resistance who is imprisoned in Montluc prison by the occupying Germans during World War II. Fontaine is determined to escape and devises a plan using only the furnishings in his tiny cell. The entire film is mesmerizing, Bresson eliminates all distracting elements normally found in modern films allowing the viewer to focus on Fontaine.
A Man Escaped is based on the memoirs of
André Devigny, who was also in the French Resistance, held in Montluc prison, and escaped the same way as shown in the film.
Robert Bresson is among the most highly regarded filmmakers of all time. He has the most number (seven) of films in the Top 250 list of greatest films ever made published by Sight and Sound in 2012.
