I need a new DVD player and am considering buying one that also does SACD.  All I need is a basic single play DVD player, my last one was a $150 Toshiba which worked fine for me. I would be looking into the same type of unit (maybe even a cheaper model) except that I may want to try out SACD (My system is geared way toward 2 ch audio) Should I try a player like the Sony DVPNS 755 ($240) which is a prog scan DVD along with multi channel SACD? This way I could get a taste of SACD and possibly start a collection of SACD's. My CD player is a nOrh CD-1. Will I be able to get a good idea of what SACD is capable of with the combo $240 Sony?

I think getting an SACD capable player is a great idea and the lower cost unit will definitely give you a taste of what this format can do. I started into SACD with the 777ES player and was amazed at how good SACD can sound - almost up there with vinyl. I then bought a low end Sony SACD player (CE775) for another system and yes, the SACD advantages where there as well, WAY better than conventional redbook on the same player. I've only heard SACD in 2 channel because thats all I'm interested in for music but I'll soon buy a DVD/SACD multi channel machine (probably the one you mentioned) for my HT rig. Great music format and if you can try it out for $240 in a decent DVD player, what's to loose?

I have to agree.  For the price of the players it may be foolish not to try SACD or DVD-A.  Too bad the Sony 500 still is not around for $150.

The Yamaha UP looks really interesting but is $900.  More like the cost of your Norh CD-1.  However, Dan Wright is now doing mods to this player and even will add the tube output stage.  It could be the one box does it all player some have been waiting for.
