ATC owners say hi...

Hi all, I'm looking to buy some active ATC 100 or 150's soon and wondered if there were any other owners out there, especially in the UK? If so drop a line here to say hi. I currently have a bryston 4bsst and wilson benesch arc combo, which I'll be upgrading from.

What's your opinion on the ATC C6 subs? Do they integrate ok? Would I be better with smaller front stereo pair and a sub, or just a big front pair and no sub at all? My room is 17' square at the moment (may be bigger later on), I listen to all sorts of music plus a few films too (but I don't bother with surround).

Also, any thoughts on the levinson 390s? Is it too dry and clinical? I'm listening to one of these in a while.

Thanks very much, Paul.

Paul:   The best bang for the buck I know of in subs is VMPS subs. Very musical and will shake the house for movies if you like.  VMPS has been praised for their bass for over 20 years.  Prices are excellent and will easily compete with SVS or HSU or ACI.

If you are going to be in a square room then you are most likely going to have problems with standing waves no matter what speaker/subwoofer you use.  A big speaker is going to exacerbate this issue.  I believe that using smaller ATC's and more than one subwoofer and maybe some bass traps might be the best way to address the situation.  This would allow you to position the speakers for the best overall tonality/imaging etc. and then place the subs where they provide the best bass.

I'm sure that ATC subs are very good as is everything else that they make.  I use a Velodyne DD-15 which incorporates a RTA and EQ system that allows one to first see and then correct the bass response at the listening position.  The result is very smooth bass response and a nearly seamless blend with the main speakers (I'm still working on getting it perfect).  In your case, a pair of DD-10 or DD-12's might be ideal.  This would certainly give you fantastic bass.

Paul, are you going to listen to the 100s or 150s in an auditorium?

If not, I would seriously suspend any talk of a sub until you have had a chance to live with the 100s (or especially the 150s).

I know of several gents that had to dump their 100s because of too much bass energy   :!:

I bet the 150s can actually do structural damage  :o

Careful with that axe Eugene....

PS - [SHAMELESS PLUG TO FOLLOW....]  Paul if you are anywhere near Ipswich have a talk with Alistair at Signals....he is A-1, and knows a thing or two about ATC.

Paul,

What do you find is missing from the Wilson Benesch Arcs that you think the ATC's will give, apart from the low bass. I'm curious, cos I'm looking at getting a pair of the WB Arcs.

Cheers
