Tube connectors
« on: 26 Jul 2020, 03:00 am »
Hi Danny,

I want to change the binding post from my amp to tube connectors will that be feasible? If the tube connectors are smaller than binding post do you think i can buy some sort of filler that i can add and have them secured to the amp?
Amp i just purchased is form Odyssey Audio and Klaus has not done that before using the tube connectors.

Thank you,

srb

You may want to read this discussion in the meantime.

That link answered my question.

I did see Mlundy's comment. "I use a 10mm bit. It’s just slightly smaller than 7/16”. The tube connectors fit tightly. I have to tap them the last half of the way in." I may have to ask Klaus to do that or i might have to do it myself.

Do any of you think by having standard binding post and tube connectors parallel will be an issue? Or should i just not fix something that's not broken?

I guess my concern is will i hear a difference? Danny makes a point with the benefits of having tube connectors for the speaker but what about the amp? It makes sense in my head that i should be able to hear some sort of difference.

I think it would be a good thing to do. I am thinking of doing the same thing to my Emerald Physics amps as well. Danny likes to tell folks to install both so you can try each for comparison. My speakers have outboard crossovers in their own metal boxes and use regular 5 way binding posts for all speaker connections and I want to replace them with either tube connectors or just hard wire them to get rid of the binding posts from the signal path.

The only caution I would offer is that it may affect the resale value of your amp.

I did email Klaus asking if he could run another cable from the board and either Klaus or myself can drill into the case using the 10mm bit and like you said having both 5 way binding posts and tube connectors.
My question to Klaus and anybody here looking at this forum. Will i have any real issues with running two cables (5 way binding post and tube connectors would be live from the same source) from the board to the back simultaneously?

or i could hard wire them from the same source on the board and connect them directly to the speaker like you said removing the binding post all together. Only question would be will i have any issues with having 5 way binding post live and the wire from the board to the speaker?

Thank you for being very dedicated you seem to have an answer to my burning questions... now can you answer me this? whats the meaning of life? lol.

I don't think it matters. Connected to the board or take it right off the binding post internally. It's the same end result. What you could do if having both connected at the same time bothers you is to hook it up one way and try it then hook it up the other way and try that and you see which way you like best.

As for the age old question? It remains.  Sorry.

I've been thinking throughout the day and rather than having Klaus adding another wire from the board, i think i may just remove the solder from the binding post the amp will come with. I will just move the wire to the tube connectors.
If i do end up selling the Amp later on I can just solder it back again to the 5 way binding post.

What do you guys think?

If so, what wire/solder do you guys recommend?

The tube connectors will sound better, no question about that, but it never hurts to have an either/or option.
