You may want to try get a Denon AVR- 3700H or 3600H you can turn of the amps on both these units and use it as a pre -pro with a external 5/7 channel amp.  if you wait until November  ( Black Friday) you could probably pick one up for less than $ 800.00 but again it won't match the SQ quality of the Modwright or a 2 channel system getting subs is always a good idea if you can swing it get a REL t/9i or a pair of  T/7i  the subs.
