In-wall/ceiling speakers?
« on: 7 Jul 2020, 07:04 pm »
We are building a new home which will include a larger HT/Listening room area. Yeah!!  But this post is about attempting to optimize the sound in the Family Room with the 85" TV. Not the HT.
I would like to use flush mounted in-wall and ceiling speakers. There are apparently LOTS of GR projects done and documented over the years not documented on the GR Site. Did any of those include this type of speaker? A search didn't show anything helpful in the forum either.
And short of that, are there any recommendations as to transducers that could be plate mounted without an enclosure that might be good performers? Maybe some type of full-range or a combination of mid-tweeter that could operate well in a wall stud cavity. I know there are huge compromises in that application, but certainly there must be a DIY solution superior to all the prefab plastic stuff that's out there for this application. As usual, any assistance/advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! Bob

DIY is the way to go to save money but I think you will still need a box to control the volume the midrange drivers see. Are you planing to use an inwall or free standing sub?

You can use Triad Speakers as a starting point for the design. I have both in-ceiling and on-wall Triads and they are very well designed and built with 3/4" MDF. Triad's are custom made in the US out of commonly available materials and could be duplicated in a home shop.

The universal consensus is RSL make the best in-ceiling speakers

I've never designed one for that application.

There are a lot of variables that affect the outcome that are hard to account for and every application is different. So it is really tough to guarantee results.

A year ago before I updated my home theater I had never heard of Triad, they mainly sell to custom home theater installers. After researching I have come to the conclusion they are one of the best home theater speakers on the market. Triad uses top quality drivers, the Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum are all made to the same high quality, the only difference is they are made for different room sizes, there in no good, better, best as other manufacturers market their products.

AVS Forum has a Triad thread, even if you don't end up buying Triad speakers the information about design and speaker placement should help a lot. Dawn Gordon is a regular, she is a Triad representative with 15 years experience and is very helpful and generous with her knowledge.

A couple of reasons I recommend Triad is (1) you are on AudioCircle and we are all about quality here and (2) Triad sound natural and balanced even when everything around you is exploding.

Triad only sells through a dealer network, I located a dealer that sells Triad speakers at 10% off, no tax and free shipping.

I bough most of my Triad speakers on eBay. Usual prices are about $450 each. Make sure you get the grill because the retail prices for new grills is high. Triad speakers are always available, patience is the key to get everything you need.

I don't think you would be able to DIY a better speaker with a good looking, paintable grill for less than $450.

These would be killer:

Triad Speaker In-Wall Silver 4 Monitors (pair)
(retail $4000)
With proprietary enclosure technology and Scan-Speak Revelator® drivers
$999.00

I would snap up these Triad Bronze In Wall Surround Sound Speakers in a heartbeat if I needed them. $450 for a clean pair is a screaming deal. I use the on-wall version. Reverse the polarity on the rear facing driver to convert it to the recommended surround bipole, it takes 15 minutes.
