Gain issue between Preamp/Power amp
« on: 27 Feb 2005, 12:15 am »
Hi Guys,

I have just purchased a new ps audio amplifier.  Unfortunately the gain between the n.e.w. p3 preamp (basically a cary preamp) and the ps audio hca - 2 isn't the greatest.

I basically have to turn the volume up to about 1 - 3 o'clock to obtain moderately loud listening levels.  I've never had to do that before.

Anyway i am hoping there may be a product that can help with altering the gain and i can insert between the 2 products.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I'd really hate to have to sell my preamp or amplifier because of this issue.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Regards

Rod

Rod, according to to data on the PS Audio website the HCA-2 input impedance is 100K and the amp has a voltage gain of 30db.
There really shouldn't be any incompatibility between the two pieces.
No information on the voltage gain of your preamp seems to be available
online.  Your system is not listed so I couldn't find any mention of your loudspeaker efficiency which will also impact  how far you have to turn the
knob on your preamp.   If you are not encountering distortion when you
rotate your volume pot this far and you can play your system loud enough
to suit you than I wouldn't be particularly concerned  at operating your preamp in this fashion.  Scotty

Hi Scotty,

Thanks for the reply.  I have a perpetual technologies p1a and p3a dac.  I have taken the p1a out of my system as it reduces the gain by 6db.  If i only use the p3a the gain is just sufficient.

When i use the p1a in the system i have had the preamp almost to full volume, i'm not that keen on doing that all the time and that is the reason i have taken it out of my system.

I'm not really that knowledgable about these types of issues.  My previous amplifier was 32 db and it worked fine.
