I think stephen chow movies aren't that great to begin with, but this one is just pure abject total shit.  I've watched all the ones he made before, and it's full of slapstick and satirical humour.  In other words, it's complete shit.  It's like shocking humour, like seeing someone swear at a cop and watching him get beat down.  This movie however, takes the cake, when it comes to lacking any merit in a cinematic feature.  It's full of cliches and it was an excercise in frustration just to finish watching that movie.  For gods sake, Stephen Chow wasn't even in this movie all that much.  They probably just used his name to give the film a semblance of credibility (or the remaining slivers of credibility he has remaining).  It was a shitty movie and was hastily produced to satisfy the American market.  Even true blue Stephen Chow lovers shun this as being a "sellout" performance.  Thumbs way down.  This movie shot a hole in the barrel, it smells worse than a ripe durian.  UGH

And wrote it, and directed it...

Looks like a second one is going to be made.

Not a good movie at all imo, they should kill off kung fu hustle.  I just thought that the movie didn't have a lot of substance.  The storyline for this movie just wasn't there, and it was weak.  I wish that they polished up the end product before releasing it.  I wonder how bad the 2nd one is gonna end up being.  I hope for stephen chow that it'll be better.

I however liked shaolin soccer a lot more and thought that it was a good movie.

I found this movie to be absolutely humorous with excellent martial-arts action. I need to watch Shaolin soccer.. Haven't seen this one yet.

LOL. Hey, Sifu! Split concrete blocks, not hairs.

>they should kill off kung fu hustle

"Kung Fu Hustle (2005)
"Total US Gross: $17,104,669
"(As of Oct. 17th, 2005)"

That is quite good for a specialty market film, and while it doesn't indicate quality it does indicate they're not going to kill it off.

But then a "gross" troll's opinion is always worth what you pay for it....

This movie alongside with Shaolin soccer are total crap. The plot is ridiculous and the special effects are terrible. It was a joke that Stephen Chow had won awards for these films he directed and acted in. Is this the best movie that HK can produce? This is bollocks.

This movie would pass for 15 year olds and below with its humor and cartoonish like special effects. Kids love over-the-top action so it would still appeal for some masses. If I were a 10 year old kid, this film would get a strong A+ rating. For mature audiences, this movie shall receive a C- rating at its best and I wouldn't hesitate in giving it a D rating if I didn't have a little conscience left in me in considering all the hard work and effort Stephen had put in into making this film.

Stephen is really taking HK movies down to the drain with this kind of production. Terrible stuff. A real stinko. Regretfully it's a full load of shit despite all the effort Stephen had put in into directing this film and becoming part of the cast himself. Rumours had it that Stephen had gone to the gym to build his physique for the final part of the film whereby he needs to show his bare chest after his shirt tore off during the execution of the so-called 'Shaolin Palm'. Looks more like a malnourished guy from Namibia to me, except that this one is fair-skinned - all bones and no lean muscles. Talking about emulating his idol in Bruce Lee, this flick is completely different from the legend's masterpieces and it's a disgrace to compare this Kung-Fu how-pow Hustle to Bruce's real kung-fu deal.

Harsh words and sarcastic it may be but truthfully conveyed from an unbiased opinion from the masses.

cool down...  "Kung Fu Hustle" was never meant to be a "Kung Fu" movies, "Shaolin Soccer" was never meant to be a "Shaolin" movies.

Stephen Chow is a comedian, who is gifted to make HK people laugh like there's no tomorrow. His audience in HK are well older than 10 year old kids. His plots were always ridiculous and stupid, but people go to see his movies for a laugh, not for the plot, not for the special effect, and definitely not for whatever elements you believe should typically be in a so-called "best movies". He makes movies  to make money, not to win awards.

He's the box-office king in HK, but he has little audience outside of HK, China & Malaysia because people outside of these regions cannot understand/appreciate his humor.

aa   I have watched both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, and in both cases I had fun watching them.  I did not know that I was supposed to gain some deep spiritual insight from the movies.  Both movies were over the top ridiculous, and as a result I laughed out loud.  Wasn't that the point?

If it has no plot and is meant to be funny, that's my kind of movie!

This is a very funny movie and the excellent P/Q and uncompressed PCM audio on the Blu ray make it a must own IMO.

I think the problem I have with stephen Chow is that I used to love watching the stuff he did back in the late 80's early 90's - The only thing that's changed in his films is the special effects...... I just don't find him funny anymore.

Overall I liked Kung Fu Hustle.  Especially the part when he is trying to pick out someone in the town to fight.  Like you, old man. (turns out he is buff), you short man. (turns out he is like 7 foot tall but was sitting down). Good stuff.
