Davanti's VS X-LS Encore??? or upgrade???
« on: 11 Jun 2020, 01:29 am »
Hello all,

This is my second post here. The first was an introduction only.

This is probably no one saw coming. Has anyone heard both the Davanti's and the X-LS Encore's?

I would guess the Encore would be better with the upgraded crossovers, but I could possibly upgrade the crossovers in the Davanti's as well. They are a very good price for being assembled and nicely finished. My wife is 100% form over function, so I think she would be pleased with them.

I also have a pair of B&W 606 and a Pair of SVS Prime bookshelf speakers I could send to Danny to upgrade, but I don't think either would ultimately compete with either of the two GR designs above. Maybe? I don't know. I would have freight both ways plus whatever the cost of the upgrade as well as what I already have in them. I think I just talked myself out of that.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW...Short of buying an already built speaker, I am completely new to this. Never dabbled in DIY audio before.

Thanks for looking!

in my opinion the midrange dip and high frequency boost that b&w voices most of their speakers with sounds unnatural and fatiguing.i have heard the svs prime bookshelfs and they are a bit harsh up top themselves.i wouldn't bother upgrading either.you are only going to get so much out of them.i would go with the encores.

Thank you for the response rdkusheer.

I have thought about this last night and I think I might actually go either for the Davanti's or the Centrare and use the Centare as a two channel steroe pair rather than a center. They are sealed rather than ported and I am in a position I have to have them pretty close to the wall behind them. I would not have to build them and try to finish them properly with my complete lack of experience. The finish work concerns me more than anything, I think. Seems like these are as close a one can get to the quality sound of these higher quality DIY kits GR is selling without building them or paying much more money. The prices are really fantastic. I could actually drive there in three hours for a little road trip rather than ship them.

How's that for run-on sentences??

Here is what I am having to deal with setting up a hi-fi system.

Not exactly audiophile approved. Probably more information than anyone wants, but Do to the placement of the speakers and the room, I think one of the Carnegie lines will probably work as well as the X-LS or another kit.

My wife thinks speakers are the devil. :icon_twisted:

regardless of how good the speakers are that you put in that space the performance will be limited by the placement.that's the bad news.the good news is that i have found the only thing that sounds worse than a good system in a bad room is a lesser system in a bad room.the best you can get is still going to sound better.you need to get speakers that will get as loud as you want in that in that space without struggling.i would think the xls encore with it's larger woofer and cabinet volume would do a better job.i think you should call danny as he will be able to advise you which will better for your room.

Thank you rdkusher.

I did speak with Danny and ended up with the Davanti's and upgraded the capacitors. I'll do a separate post with the details and maybe some pics of my very basic DIY work.
