Three Duals!
« on: 25 May 2020, 01:41 pm »
Wife changed the furniture around. She put the sofa near the back wall, so I had to move my third sub. Decided to try it front & center. Wow! Aside from bigger, badass bass, the soundstage improved - more prominent peripheral details. (Not sure of the science behind bass affecting the entire sound spectrum -- maybe someone can explain it here.)

Dialed it in. Placement didn't create any imaging issues. Room is 13 ft. wide; speakers are 32" from the side walls. Since my system is in the family room, I may have to move the middle sub in place every time I listen critically. It's a minor inconvenience that will only take a few seconds. No spikes or footers -- the sub slides easily on the wood floor without scratching it.

Nice!
Three subs, and one wife... that seems safe enough!  8)

Try laying it on its side.

And then build a stand for that center channel to get it up closer to your screen.

Could you do a swarm-like setup and place the center dual at the back of the room?

just curious

I think that is where it was before the couch was moved.

Very nice.

What people need to realize is by using the dual subs with monitors of your choice on top, you can get world class sound on a beer budget and those monitors would deliver the goods.

If I were starting all over again, I would get Danny’s dual subs, or the Rythmik FN-8s, and some open baffle, high efficiency, upper section from Danny, or may experiment myself. The speakers are just that good.

OK, I'll try laying on it's side. I'm shocked my wife hasn't said anything about it, so I may be able to keep as is.

Regarding the center channel -- I don't care about HT anymore, so tweaking the sound quality is a very low priority. Movies suck nowadays. No story, just comic-based super heroes. I'm bored just thinking about it. We watch a movie like once or twice a year.

The third sub was originally on the back wall, but when we placed the sofa in front of the sub, it sounded like it was in a tunnel. I had to find another place for it. I'm guessing it will sound better front & center as opposed to being on one of the side walls. It's playing up high enough where you can locate the sound.

Danny should design a wall-hanging servo sub. 8)

Sealed subs do better at the back of the room.  OB subs do better at the front, IME.

Problem is -- sealed servo subs don't sound as good as OB servo subs. I suppose the decision to add a seal sub(s) in the back depends on musical tastes, as well. Trade-offs.

Hey Early

I wanted to thank you for this post. I hadn't thought about buying a single dual-12" sub and putting in the center.  It's a stop over on the way to stereo triple-12"s and associated flatpaks. I need to go pickup my cabinet from a local carpenter. They hit me up today and it's done.  :thumb:

Good move. I started with a single dual servo sub in the center until I could save up for a second sub. That's one of the major benefits of DIY that's often overlooked -- you can take incremental steps to achieve your goal based on your budget and other factors.

IIRC,  Danny  typically  ran  2 sealed subs in the rear of his room at  RMAF withthe OB  triples up front.  The rear subs are  run out of phase from the fronts  and  at  a much  lower  volume

And that worked really well.

I imagine it would! What was the room size?
