I thought it lacked any music of complexity. He stated in the review they play wonderful with poorly recorded music....but didn't prove it.  Just simple well recorded instrumentals mostly. No Rock or Pop. No Classical/orchestra. Almost no male vocals. He left a lot on the table in my opinion..especially for a 30 minute sound demo.  What he DID play was great but nothing I would ever listen to. Just another incomplete representation which is the norm with most of these Youtube reviews. YMMV but I was disappointed and wouldn't buy them until I heard how they sound with stuff up my alley. Hopefully somebody does an all encompassing video review that covers all the bases.

I have to ask....how does anyone judge the sound of speakers by watching a video of them?  A video that is being played through the speakers of a phone or computer or anything else for that matter?

I can't say that I'd ever base a purchase on a video of a speaker. But when one is using a good mic and setup like in this video, the quality of the speaker does come through. I have heard some demos on Youtube that sounded far better than others, but that may just come down to the quality of the recording equipment. Whenever I record my system on my iphone, it sounds like hammered dog s&*t........ :duh:

The simple answer is you can’t. It’s impossible. Even if you could hear exactly what he heard over a video, it really means very little given that every room is different.  The value is his commentary. He knows the music he plays and how it sounds on different speakers so he can give you his thoughts that way. If you look at the comments, people really think they hear what he hears, its sad really because that is impossible. I’ve ordered a pair of these and am super excited, I hope to reflect what he says in his video.

The other large amount of comments is what he didn’t play or that he didn’t play what that commenter likes. Well that is impossible to play everything everyone likes and an even bigger issue is finding stuff that isn’t protected by law.

At the end of the day there is some value to his format but it’s more for the commentary to highlight his experience and for entertainment value.

My TV audio is toslinked to my DAC, and comes out my M3TMs. I'm amazed how great some YouTube videos sound. But, I agree, no way would I use YouTube videos to evaluate the sound of hi-fi components. Fortunately, Spatial offers a 60 in home trial. And I can say unequivocally that no speaker, regardless of cost, in any video I've listened to through my Spatials, has sounded better than my Spatials. How about that?  :icon_surprised:

Listening to the sound clips on another system (speakers) is not recommended. Headphones will be your best bet and still introduce a number of problems. With all that being said, it's the REASON for the commentary. I am not sharing impressions of what the sound clips sound like, i'm sharing how the speakers sound in the room. In regards to the previous comment about not having enough Rock music in the clips, I can add some in future videos without much trouble. Thanks everyone.

So I think you are doing a swell job  :thumb:

The question came up on your video about comparing the Sapphires to Danny's OB offerings. Are you willing to speak about that?

Have you heard the X3 and if so, what was your opinion of it?

Thx

Go look at this live Spatial chat video for his comparison thoughts between Spatial and GR research. He is indeed doing a great job!

Ron did a great job and has a great name, ha. People who poo poo it have not made a YouTube video, and in my opinion come off as entitled. Ron is giving this for FREE remember and probably spent close to 2 grand on recording gear for YOU to hear the sound. I for one am thankful. Only critique is volume could have been louder.

Myself, I gain much from such recordings if done well. I use good quality headphones to listen. While I would not base a purchase on a YouTube video, it may play a factor.

I like what I hear from the speakers and they offer great value. When I compare the M3s to my own YouTube recording of my modified GR Research Super Vs, I can hear the more “solid state” sound of the M3’s closed back mid/hi driver, verses the completely open, “tube” sound of the BG Neo 10 on the Super Vs. Bass seems over cooked as well and would want control over it's volume. I am too jaded to be happy with the M3s for that reason and would save more for the X series with it’s open backed driver, if buying. This, thanks to Ron’s work.

My system overview and sound sample from IPhone, for comparison.

I would never buy a speaker based on a sound demo.  Sound demos over YouTube will never prove anything.  You should pay more attention to what he is saying.  I never once heard him say that they play "wonderful" will poorly recorded music.  If that is what you are after then these are not your speakers or any neutral high fidelity speaker for that matter.  They are just ok with poorly recorded music.

Just because he did not play the music you like is not a reason to be so rash.  Taste vary widely.  And keep in mind he is not done reviewing.  And he as already posted a second sound demo video.

Thanks for the logical, well thought breakdown. Nice to see someone appreciate and recognize what I’m trying to do here. Makes the investment in all the gear and all the time it takes to make the clips worthwhile. Really appreciate it!

I agree.  Was it some sort of dreadful audiophile sampler disc?

I agree.

You are welcome Ron, and thank you for your work. I appreciate your style, thoughtful reviews, and honesty. You are one of the top, online, reviewers in my opinion, and I know it's not easy putting yourself out there. Keep up the good work. Do try and make your sound samples louder though. On my phones it's just barely loud enough. Another 3 db would go a long ways. I would try to play the music louder in order to better convey the power and dynamics of the system.

I found these videos extremely helpful. And although you'll never know how these speakers sound listening to YouTube videos, I can hear differences between speakers. These open baffle planar speakers sound much more natural , even through my inexpensive soundbar, than most box speakers I've heard listening through the same speakers at home.

It also helps that I heard SA's top of the line speaker at one of the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest shows a few years back, and thought it was one of the best sounding speakers at the show.

Ron,

I really enjoy your content and this series of videos on the M3S is no exception starting with the chat with Clayton.  I really enjoyed the two videos with the sound clips too.  The music are not tracks I am familiar with.  However, I am very interested to hear them on my M3S.  Would you be able to provide a tracklist from the first video?  I also really like the commentary from as well.  Thanks.

Ron did a great job, considering the medium tends to obstruct the message. I really don't know why someone (other than Ron) would, say, play a demo on, let's say,  the mega buck Wilson speakers on YT with sound only! Even if you had a pair of the Wilson's (for example) and was listening to YOUR OWN speakers on YT, the sound quality would suck!
But, Ron did a great job describing IN THE MOMENT what he was hearing and that is what this hobby is all about! Ron, if you're listening (pun intended) and you want a really excellent huge deep bass short track, check out More Music From the Motion Picture Gladiator track (9) "All that Remains" (I think) 57 seconds of subterranean bass!
