I should just try this myself, but I'm wondering if anyone is using, or has tried to use, an older preamp with a good phono stage connected to a newer line stage preamp. I'm thinking one could simply use the tape out of the old preamp to any input of the line stage. This might be a way to avoid buying  an outboard phono stage that could be costly.

That's exactly the correct way to do it.

I've done it many times to access the phono section inside older receivers, integrateds, etc.

I own a half dozen preamps. I have at least three other preamps connected to my main preamp. And yes two of them are for the phono stage in the secondary preamp.
Works great.
