The lesson here Redbook CD, done right is capable of the highest resolution. Don't need anything else, it's all in the quality of the Mastering. :smoke:

...Yes , I have always felt that way as well . Now that the BCD3 is here I too am hearing how good CDs sound if they are well engineered...and thanks for this fine device  Bryston.

Hi Folks,

Its a great barometer of how a 'dedicated' approach can reap performance benefits. There was a lot of pressure on me to make the BCD-3 SACD compatible plus other features that I new would take away from the standard Redbook CD optimization of the BCD-3.  Glad I stuck with it.

That is exactly what a mastering engineer would tell you. There are people who tend to take all the credit for what others have done before they put their 'signature' on it. Structural engineers call them architects and recording and mixing engineers call them mastering engineers. Mastering in actuality is only the final stage, the last few percent in audio production. If everything has been done right, a mastering engineer will have a happy day. If it hasn't been done right, then there is almost nothing that a mastering engineer will be able to do to make it better.

I agree that most of it is in the recording though.

What I mean is I can take an uncompressed recording and copy it to a cd-r. A cd-r will play the uncompressed copy, and with the BCD-3 it'll actually be slightly better to my ears than the original. Redbook cd had always sounded thin compared to concert dvd & blu ray that I have and I finally realized that cd's are compressed. But it doesn't have to be compressed audio, that is just the way cd's have been marketed. Giving consumers, audio enthusiasts, audiophiles an inferior product, why? I would have to say it has been done deliberately because recording companies don't want people to have a copy as good or better than the Masters. :smoke:

Since getting the BCD-3, I've had little to no inclination to go to streaming. The $$$$ spent on streaming capabilities now go to adding more classical CDs to my collection. Except for one or two streamers, none of the major ones begin to approach the diversity of what is out there in the classical music world.

I don't mind having to get up out of the chair to flip in another CD. And, I don't have search through a web page to find what I want to hear.

The B CD-3 truly is a design meant to produce the best from a Redbook CD. The care and mastering that went into the release clearly is evident.

YMMV

I have a BCD-3 I am listening to now.  It is such a nice player.  I really do enjoy going through my CD collection (with all this time I have on my hands now).  However, I also have a nice Lumin StreamerDAC.  I have all my CDs burned to a hard drive installed in a Roon Nucelus.  I enjoy the convenience and superb sound quality of the streamer and the seamless interface with Roon and access to an extensive library of music via Tidal and Qobuz.  I also have a VPI Aries turntable and 100s of albums.  I'm not one to draw a line in the sand with regard how I access music.  I enjoy all the options and am happy to have these choices.  Do I have a favorite?  No.  Nor do I feel the need to declare one.  It is not a competition, it is an exhibition. A smorgasbord vs a Price Fixe.

I have owned the BCD-1 and now the BCD-3 and its a staple of my system. I use it every day and it sounds wonderful. It still sounds better than my Bryston turntable although I'm still using a MM cartridge. As I upgrade to a good phono pre amp and MC cartridge it will be interesting to see which sounds better.

Just for info for BCD-3 users, I just applied ( 3 )  Isoacoustic Graphite Oreo's underneath my BCD-3 ( feet removed ) and found the sound much cleaner and more crisp from mid's on up...A very modest cost improvement.....Great player made better.........
