Alice, my friend and movie buddy, and I have an eclectic movie tastes and a running joke - "I don't know anyone I can recommend that movie too"

Our friends are very pedestrian.

In that spirit I can recommend 'The Wild Goose Lake' for the adventurous film watcher. Wild Goose Lake was filmed in Wuhan, China. The lake, urban and seedy areas are real locations within the city. I discovered the film in a NYT review, watch the preview. I always like to match the menu with the movie so we got Chinese takeout which supported a local restaurant too.

‘The Wild Goose Lake’ Review: A Noir Thriller in Wuhan  This film is dark and moody like the old classics, but the director Diao Yinan has created a very contemporary crime drama.

"Diao Yinan’s “The Wild Goose Lake,” a stylish neo-noir of saturated colors and meticulous visuals, every single shot seems to be composed and lit with obsessive attention to detail. Washed with a sparkling golden filter and unfolding under the pouring rain near a train station, the film’s very first scene claims this diligent aesthetic at once, with two strangers (one, wearing an eye-catching red sweater for extra oomph) engaging in a hushed, nervous, time-crunched exchange."
