Greetings from Canada
« on: 3 May 2020, 01:07 am »
Hello - Just joined the Circle, and this is to introduce myself.
I've played jazz piano for over 50 years, and I'm still trying.
Gigs here in Canada, the US and England.
My audio setup is now something I'm quite happy with, having spent the last ten years refining it.
First entered the hobby in 1968, then let it lapse while I got on with life.
Now that I'm retired, there's no limit on the time I can spend tweaking. It's tough to get piano recordings that sound "right".
Listen mainly to jazz and classical.

Best to all members,
Phil

How usually piano recordings sound to your ears?

Thanks for the kind welcomes - much appreciated!

Without getting into too much detail, one of the main problems with piano recordings is the stereo. So often, esp. in jazz, they put the treble on the right and the bass over on the left, as if the mic is in the piano player's mouth. But it doesn't really sound that way when you are playing the real thing. If your audio system has a wide sound stage, the player sounds possessed of a reach 10 or more feet wide.!

There's probably a more appropriate thread for this discussion, so won't go on here.

Thanks Phil for your reply.
To be true I like this piano recording approch you mentioned, with large soundstage but not close-up mike placement or too far but in a mid distance. In the 70s my sister studied piano two years, so I hit a few keys, but don't even notice something similar.

Man, I have never seen so many people join Audiocircle as of late. It's almost like a major audio site must have died and the inmates have flocked to another cell.

BTW. Nice to see another Canuck here. Are you in Alberta?

I'm in Ontario, just outside the GTA.

When I browsed this forum, I was struck by the gracious atmosphere it presented. I didn't get into this hobby to win arguments, and find some of the threads on other sites a bit tiresome.
