Keep or solder?
« on: 30 Apr 2020, 02:22 am »
I've had these cheap connectors on my speakers from Day 1. They connect the crossover to the woofer and tweeter. The only reason I haven't removed them yet and soldered the crossover directly to the drivers is convenience. I can remove my entire crossover in two minutes without de-soldering. There have been several times in the past where this has been beneficial, namely to perform crossover upgrades. I think I'm done with upgrades. Is it time break out the soldering iron or do I maintain the convenience of it all? How much of a sonic difference does it make?

Opinions will vary  but I'd just keep them. Maybe check that the tension/spring in them is still giving a strong grip and clean them with Caig de-oxit.

Early B,
If you are done messing with parts and happy with the tone and resolution, clean everything up and solder them in. That said, a good connector is better than a bad solder joint.

There’s always the “if it ain’t broke” rule too.

I have the same issues in my rig. I need to take off a set of cheap banana plugs and install Danny’s tube connector pins. But the system sounds so good I’m afraid to touch it.  :?

Same here -- cheap banana plugs on my speaker cables on the amp side. I forgot why I had to use them. They were supposed to be temporary, but I didn't hear any sound degradation, so no point in upgrading them to tube connector pins which is what I have on the speaker end.

Lots of little things really add up. Push on connectors, binding posts, banana plugs.... Yuk.

Swap all of it out and once and you'll then hear what you've been missing.

I buttoned them up with solder today. I didn't hear any difference, but I felt better about finally doing it.
