Improving Polk RTi70 and CSi3
« on: 21 Apr 2020, 04:45 pm »
Hi all,

I bought a used pair of Polk RTi70 along with CSi3 in 2017 and have been using them along with my Denon X2400H all this while.
I'm very happy with the price/performance of these speakers so far.

However, after auditioning several speakers in a couple of years' duration, I started to feel that my Polks lack the sparkle in high frequencies that gives you that "wow" factor.
I'm wondering if anyone has made (cost-effective) changes/mods to the RTi70s that have improved the HF response of the speakers.

Please let me know what can be done.

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to Audio Circle.  :D

What do you consider cost effective?

I used to own the RTi70's many years ago. My suggestion is to sell them and purchase one of Danny's kits at GR Research. Whatever kit you choose will sound 10x better than the Polks for the same coin.

Thank you, everyone. I am open to upgrading to better speakers, but since these polks have a very good cabinet structure and I'm feeling the itch to tweak them, I wanted suggestions (preferably tested ones) to enhance them (expense well within $50 for the pair) before I make the switch.

I had a look at the crossovers recently and thought if I were to improve on the SQ, I can give a shot at upgrading the caps.
ClarityCaps for equivalent ratings might cost around $30. Is this a good place to start?
P.S: If upgrading the caps is preferred, I'll go ahead and try it out. If that doesn't help with the SQ, can I repurpose the ClarityCaps later to a DIY project?

Don't put lipstick on a pig and expect it to oink any louder.

Those Polks aren't worth upgrading. Put that $50 towards getting better speakers.

I was looking into x-statik kit from GR and looks like DIY has more bang for buck.
Also, Lii audio full-range drivers have pretty good specs. Guess, I'll sell my Polks once I decide one what to get next.
Thanks all for the tips  :thumb:

Those should be a serious upgrade from your Polks.

Worth mention if one have a small room a Full Range driver in a Bass Reflex box may be suited, further benefits connecting directly to the amplifier are less cost and no musical losses of using an xover in the music signal.

For OB FR panel the Lii F-15 is a winner currently hard to beat it for $400.
