Intro and newbie pdp 607cmx and hk avr254
« on: 20 Apr 2020, 06:31 pm »
Hi everyone,  I'm Amy,  I'm a newbie poster, don't normally do this kind of thing, so forgive my ignorance and please be kind. Here goes,  roommate acquired a pioneer pdp 607cmx 60 inch plasma has video card(no remote), also acquired a Harman kardon avr254 sound system (no remote). Plasma does not have HDMI but we do have the HDMI to dvi adapter. Prior to adding hk, he ran speakers directly to plasma and Roku to plasma using the hdmi adapter. Everything has worked great until the hk was added, we can get sound with tuner radio but not for the Roku. Should he leave the Roku connected directly to plasma? Can the Roku even work through the hk? Adapter? Also the hk has optical but plasma does not ideas? He's usually pretty good at this but I have no confidence in this task,so please any advice is much appreciated. I'll post pic when I get back home. Stay safe everybody,

Welcome!  The manual of the AVR should give you some indications - e.g. - https://www.manualslib.com/manual/65696/Harman-Kardon-Avr-254.html?page=13#manual  Roku also has different models.  How is everything connected now?  Do you have a regular HDMI cable from the Roku to the receiver?  Remember that DVI is video only, no audio.  So you may need an HDMI cable going from the receiver to the TV.  If the TV has no HDMI (not familiar with it) as you noted, then you need to look at the capabilities in the receiver settings.  Page 11 of the manual indicates that if your display is not HDMI compatible then it needs to be connected via an analog video.  If your Roku does not have this capability, then you can't do it.  The other way to do it is if you TV has analog or digital audio outputs and then you can connect the Roku to the TV and get the sound to the receiver from the TV and put the receiver on the appropriate input where you connected it to the TV.

Newbie here, introducing myself. Long time reader, always reading and learning.
Salk towers speakers being run by denon 6500.  Looking to use my old denon 4311 to power
Some of the speakers in zone 2 .  Going to try it.

Welcome!  Is this the model you have?  http://manuals.denon.com/AVRX6500H/NA/EN/index.php

If so, it has RCA outputs for two zones or speaker outputs that can be used for height channels or another zone (requires going into the settings and then the 6500 would control the volume).

Is this the other receiver you are talking about?  https://www.crutchfield.com/S-h2Nt2OiAwYe/p_033AV4311C/Denon-AVR-4311CI.html

If so then if you are going to use the 4311 to power speakers, you'll need to connect the RCA zone outputs of the 6500 or one of the other preamp outputs (e.g. if height channels are unused) into one of the inputs of the 4311.  If you used a preamp output other than the zone 2 or 3 outputs, then you'll have to go into the settings to let the receiver know that height channels for example are not in play in the main zone.
