Xls encore ....in parts express box?
« on: 27 Mar 2020, 08:09 pm »
Hi...new member here....Crimsonhead......( as I love the music of King Crimson)......as a new member it seems I cannot  search the forums until I post 3 times?... So..in perusing the photos of GR builds...I saw a build using a parts express .5 ft cabinet....and I got very excited...as I am a horrible Klutz when it comes to DYI.....And I am hoping someone can send me the link to the person who has done this adaptation....?... and any advice if this box will work with the encore mini monitor? I am kind of a lowfi/ midfi guy...but want to upgrade from my Sony speakers that came with a mini system 20 years ago.....thanks ...Gary

Gary,

Parts Express used to sell pre-finished boxes that could be used with the X-LS Encore but they still required a fair amount of work. The driver and port openings needed to be cut and the internal brace was in the wrong position so it had to be cut out and a new brace installed. I don’t think they carry them anymore though.

Welcome! This is a great place to learn and get help and advice.

Be warned! You may not be able to maintain that low-fi mid-fi status here for long. Once you start down this road it is very hard to stop. You can consider Danny's (GR Research) speakers a gateway drug to the world of Hi-fidelity audio. Your bank account will hate you. Because once you hear them you will realize that you need a better amp and then a better??? and on it goes. You get the idea.

Is there a flat pack available for the Xls? I haven't seen it. But it looks to be an easy build. You can do it. Ask any questions you may have here.

Yes, Peter Rawlings (PeterJ) cuts them.

Yeah,  he's done a great  job on the kit.
Here's  an assembly video of the  cabinets:

Thanks for the encouragement.....My first goal is to actually get my system back up to where i had it 40 years ago....ie 45 watt yamaha with ADS 420  speakers.....I 've been listening to a Sony mini system for the last 30 years....I remember how horrible that system sounded compared to the ADS speakers.( that I had blown the tweeters out of)... but after a month, my ears got used to the low fi sound. My budget is pretty limited, I have a slightly used Onyko 9150 amp....onkyo midfi CD player....no turntable....so if I manage to buy and make the xls....I will be happy for quite a while!!!
