Returning audiophile - Elac speaker improvement
« on: 18 Mar 2020, 08:55 pm »
I’m back (from a divorce) but on a very tight budget. I auditioned various speaker under $1,000.00
The Elac Uni-fi uf5 was the winner, mids and highs were beautifully clear and reproduced easily a well defined sound stage. Bass, well… bass was balanced but lacks resolution.
I know that with some tightening of the enclosure, good damping material and heavy gauge air core inductors the improvement would be noticeable.
The problem is I don't know how to remove the plastic bezels covering the drivers without damaging it.
Have anyone removed the drivers successfully, please help.

This is Andrew Jones holding the bare coax at CES 2016.

The two screw holes are likely oriented horizontally to avoid interference with the woofer.
My guess: Often they use torx or allen head screws to mount the driver, then they can push little nibs molded into the plastic trim into the allen screw heads with friction fit. Getting a grip to be able to pull it off without marring the soft plastic edges is the trick. You could try very sticky tape over a screw and jerk it off very fast - might budge it enough to get a fingernail under there. Or maybe a tiny suction cup. Smallest at amazon was 18mm, dunno if that's small enough to stick.
Good luck and welcome to AudioCircle.

Thank for your advice, I will start with sticky tape.

With the sticky tape was easy taking out the plastic bezel.

Surprice, the enclosure was divided into three chambers.
As expected one for the mid, but the upper woofer has its own chamber with one port.
The lower two woofers share the rest of the enclosure.
All three woofers are wired in series making its nominal impedance 12 ohms.

I pretend to replace the two coils in series with the woofers, the problem is finding a pair of air cores 10.0mH gauges 14 or 12.
Does anyone know where I can find those inductors?
