New User Introduction
« on: 17 Mar 2020, 02:38 pm »
I'm a directly heated single ended triode kind of guy and have used many types of amps over the years: 45, 2A3, 300b, 845 and 805; and a variety of speakers: Klipsch, Edgarhorns, RCA LC-1a's and Merlin VSM's. The 45 or 2A3 coupled with the RCA LC-1A's is a favorite combo. For the front end I have a Cocktail Audio X50D streaming to a Rockna Wavedream Signature DAC.

Music-wise I'll go anywhere, Americana to symphonic classical, etc. Well, death metal not so much.

Currently I've been exploring high powered SET as well as class D with less efficient modern high rez speakers like Magico A3's. The journey continues.

Welcome to Audio Circle. :D

Up until a few years ago I was very much a SET lover, but that has all changed once and for all. Much to my surprise I have come to the realization that the best Class D amps leave nothing to be desired. No more tubes for me!  :D :D

Thanks for the welcome Wind Chaser.

Yes, I'm finding class D to be very exciting. One aspect that I haven't quite heard from class D that I hear with SET is the holographic effect. With class D I certainly hear great sound staging, ample depth and layering, but if you take a single instrument or voice, the SET seems to present it more 3 dimension-ally. This I acknowledge may be entirely the result of additive distortions.  What class D amps do you like?

I'm using Digital Amplifier Company Cherry Maraschino mono block amplifiers. They are superior in every way to all of the many SETs I have owned over the years, and I should add that I am a stickler for localized 3 dimensional imaging in a large holographic soundstage.  :D

Hi Deep.

There is not a Class D amp that I know of that can do 3D, individual, instruments like a Single Ended, or SET, amp. That is why my next amp is going to be the Single Ended Musical Paradise 501. I am hoping that it will create the 3D instruments I have heard from some great amps. We'll see.

I recently read Frank Van Alstine say that Class D does most things right, but leaves the music behind. Something like that. So there you go, everyone has an opinion.
