what wood and thickness?
« on: 4 Mar 2020, 07:03 pm »
Hi, newbie here.  I have a pair of open baffles made with 1/2" birch plywood.  They have a lowther PM6A and Tune tubby 12" in them now  I want to buy a maple, sycamore or walnut live edge plank and drop in those drivers.  Has anyone done anything like that?  Any recommendations on wood and thickness?  I am thinking I need at least an 18 to 20" wide plank.  thanks, alex

Of cource maple and walnut are better imo, I think 30mm are the minimum thick for an OB, seems these below use 50mm>

Alex,

I put Viston B200 drivers into 5/8" Baltic Birch with wings and it worked fine. If need be, you can always brace the baffles... that is, if need be.  :D

A thick plank of hardwood will avoid vibration pretty well. I would shoot for 2" if you can route the holes that deep. Seal it very well so it doesn't warp and damage your drivers.

Whatever species you pick, go for quarter sawn not flat sawn. Much more stable. Less movement and warping.
