Tripath. I gotta get me one of these...... but which one???

Bolder is offering 2 tripath amps. The modified TEAC (30 watts) and a battery powered model (9 watts@4 ohms.) My speakers are Triangle Titus' (90db-4 ohms-C/O to tweeter only, with a powered sub.) With my modest listening habits, I'm sure 9 watts will suffice. So, how does one, choose one, when one, can't listen to one???
Also, I'm presently using a quality 1K Stepped Attenuator from a Sony 555 es to my Mac MC-122 with a 10k input impedance with excellent results. Will this attenuator work with the above 2 amps?

I don't want to be alarmist, but has anyone else noticed that the Teac unit is no longer listed anywhere on the J&R site? I ordered one 2 weeks ago as a trial for a multi-amped setup, with the idea that I'd get a second if it works. However, it's not there.
There are other web sites that come up via google, but I hope this doesn't mean it's discontinued (which seems to be the fate of every 'cheap underground favorite' just as it catches on)

franjy - your 4ohm speakers might tax the smaller battery powered amps - I am sure Wayne or someone else can comment definitively about that - whereas the Teac can take the load no problem - I ran the Teac into my Totem Rokk (86Db 4ohm load) for months, no issues.

Also, down the road you might end up with different speakers, and may desire a little more power.

As a very happy Bolder modded Teac owner, you cannot go wrong with this piece, in my estimation.

The proponents of the battery powered world do have their points, but for me, this is the amp for some time to come.

than at 8. Your point about new speakers is valid, however I wouldn't go back to low efficient speakers ever again.

are you sure that the battery powered amps also push more power into lower ohm speakers?

I thought I read that they distort sooner - but hey, that is just my recollection, I don't know, as I have not owned or heard one.

It drives 4ohm speakers very well, and in fact the 9w rating is based on 4ohm speakers... it only puts out 5-6w into 8ohms IIRC.

Apparently, Vinnie uses Triangle Titus himself, and really likes the sound with the ClariT, no issues at all with 90/4 speakers. In fact, 4 Ohm speakers allow more out of the amp. Try one, he has a brand new batch.

What is going on? I Froogled the Teac and got prices from $300+ down to the standard $99!! Looks like some dealers are listing it a 100w/channel and others at 30w/channel. Is this part of a gouging exercise or what?

Yes, I am using a pair of Triangle Titus 202's (modified crossovers) with my Clari-T-Amp. Naturally, higher efficiency speakers are better suited for the Clari-T (I've heard 100dB sensitive Lowthers in back-loaded horns that sounded absolutely incredible with the Clari-T) but as long as you are not looking for bass slam and very loud volume levels, the Titus 202's work well. You get beautiful imaging, speed, and dynamics.

BTW, two Clari-T-Amps can easily be used as a monoblocks. You just use one of the two channels. The TA2024 chip works 1/2 as hard, and the battery will last twice as long between charges.

As for the Teac, well, the only place in Canada that stocks them is still trying to get $499 Canadian for them! Wanker!

I have a teac powering my 626r's and it distorts pretty bad at moderate to high volume levels. At low volume it's great, but...

Interesting. Wonder what kind of load the VMPS speakers are?

I like the sound quite a bit at low volumes, sounds like a live band is right in front of me, but when I crank it up the treble starts to crackle.

To followup on my earlier post about J&R, the Teac units are magically back on the site, still at $99. I have no idea why they went away, but at least they're back.
