Servo Sub kits
« on: 16 Feb 2020, 05:41 pm »
Greetings,

I would like to pair the studios with the servo sub kit2 (stereo subs) but those don't seem to have a balanced input, just the servo sub kit 1. (that's what i can make out from the low quality picture) am i correct? or do my eyes deceit me?
I will be pairing them with Schiit Ragnarok
Will servo sub kit 1 match well with the monitors? or should i just stick to one servo sub kit 2?

Thank you,

When you order the kit ask for an A370XLR3 amp. It’s a little more expensive than the amp in the kit but it has both balanced and unbalanced inputs.

I want to pair my nx studio speakers to servo subs left and right channel as well. (Stereo)
Only brand that has confirmed of supporting stereo subs has been Schiit.
I would like to support buying an Odyssey amp but I would like to pair my subs with it's respective monitor.
I don't want to run mono dual subs.

I went from having my heart set on NAD M33 to considering something else because the M33 most likely does not support stereo subs.

I understand human ear can't pick up location source of sub frequency and it shouldn't matter. But its something I personally am interested.

Thank you

The NAD M33 has single ended preamp outputs for each channel. You can connect these to the subs for stereo subwoofers.

I have the M32 which is very similar.  It will output either RCA sub level if you activate the subwoofer mode or full range as a preamp output without sub mode.  In Subwoofer mode you can select stereo or mono.  The sub output level is low when using high efficiency speakers With the speaker outputs and sub preamp outputs so I had to use Y cable splitter from each channel output into both inputs on the subs for a level boost.  So left output split into R and L input in subwoofer. That fixed the low output problem by 3-6db.  It has very clean sound.  I hear the M33 is supposed to have a little more power, even lower distortion and a better display.

I really like the Bluesound app.  It’s almost as good as the interface for the tidal app on an iPad.  It’s the best app for streaming audio that I know of.  You can activate or deactivate groups of players or single players for wireless whole house sound using the application from a PC, phone or tablet.  I had the LS50w speakers and that app was not good.  One app for music, a different app to control speaker settings.  Bluesound lets you adjust the players sound settings in the app on my node and some of the settings on the M32.

Friday last I was conscripted (actually nicely asked) to detour over to Michael Lundy’s home and shop to help manhandle a GR Research Servo Sub Five from workshop to listening room. This commission by a Chicago area customer to Uilleam Audio for a pair of the GR Research Servo Sub Five stacks the 3 x 12” woofers in an H-frame with the servo amp built into the base. The amp is often housed in its own box yielding a shorter tower but this client wanted an all-in-one solution. I found the resulting taller tower to have very pleasing tall proportions in the statement HiFi aesthetic category. A pair of these in your listening room will impress even before the music or movie starts.

While Michael finished wiring the servo circuit I got a close up look at the SW-12-16FR drivers. Impressive, looks more like a $500-$1000 sub driver rather than the $249 DR charges. I like the spring loaded connectors that will tightly grip the wire throughout their life despite the high vibration environment it is their lot to endure.

With wiring completed it was time to earn my keep as we moved sub #1 off the workbench into the listening room and sub #2 onto the workbench. This reminds me to mention that Danny Richie and Michael Lundy are raving maniacs! Lundy has used (and Richie I know you put him up to this) TWO layers of ¾” MDF so this sub has ONE AND A HALF INCH THICK baffles and sides. Moving them wasn’t quite at the piano mover league, but getting there. Planning, leverage, teamwork and a moving dolly were required.

Michael was looking for a functional test so we moved the ‘5 tower’ into his living room home theater system not his state of the art upstairs man cave (man loft?) system that includes Servo Sub 4s. A conventional box sub was disconnected and the 5 tower plugged in. After some sweep tests Michael queued up the Blu-ray of “Live at Montreux 2004 by Phil Collins”. I believe it was cut 1 that starts with Collins soloing on his drum kit, then joined by the second drummer on his kit, then a third drummer on Latin drums and percussion, and finally the rest of the band. Wow and WOW. The 5 tower was behind the sofa where I set in the sweet spot, throughout the session all the bass appeared to come from the front soundstage. Very impressive for an uncalibrated sub plopped down in a random location. As I enjoyed the demo what really impressed was the tactile way I felt the drum hits in my chest. The volume was loud but not too loud to talk. This was unique in my experience to feel the bass at not-ear-endangering SPLs. Three 12s is BIG FUN, I envy the owner who will get to fine tune and enjoy SIX.

Early B.

Whoa!!!  That's awesome.

BTW -- I'd love to see someone design and build an add-on module to the bottom of their existing dual servo sub kit to house the amp.

And I thought my dual subs were heavy!  I wouldn’t want to move those.  :peek:

OK there HAL let me check my calendar for some open time to help move those 6x12 OB servo sub towers.  ...... ...... Oh no, too bad I'm booked until...forever.

Michael Lundy maxed me out last Wednesday when I returned to help pack and load the pair of 3x12 OB servo sub towers into his van prior to his road trip delivery. He reports the delivery was long drives before and after a long setup day made worthwhile by a very happy client. Mike has sent me some pictures I will post in the "Mike Lundy for cabinets and completed speakers" thread https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=164355.msg1836945#msg1836945.
