Realize that DIY speakers can't be auditioned, you can easily mess up the build, and resale really sucks.
On the plus side you can (but not always) save a boatload of money if you know what you want. My first high-end speakers were a DIY hybrid (bought finished 2-way monitors and built the bass units from the same manufacturer kits after hearing a similar finished 3-way speaker. One of the very best speakers I've ever heard. Somehow built one of the bass boxes 0.5 inches narrower (didn't appreciably affect the sound). But the veneering went horribly (products have come a very long way since 1980). And couldn't sell them (before the internet).
