Kirk Douglas, known as one of the most beloved tough guys in Hollywood history on screen and a defender of blacklisted artists off screen, died Wednesday at age 103.

My Dad took my brother and I to see Spartacus at one of the big, grand movie palaces in downtown Chicago. Kirk Douglas was amazing on that huge screen.

The NY Times has an excellent eulogy by his rabbi, David Wolpe:

My chance encounter with him happened during the summer of 1966. I was a senior at the university of Oregon. My girlfriend and I were sitting just off the walkway on the grass on one of the landscaped quads. A man approached from my back and I noticed my gf had stopped our conversation and was staring at the person. He came up to us and asked were the Theatre building was located. I pointed it out to him. He was there to see son Michael who was a student there for a couple years. I was surprised at how small of a man he was. I thought him much larger from seeing him on the big screen :) RIP

Well not really.  I asked a friend a several years back how long he wanted to live... he said to 100.  I told him "Be careful what you ask for".  He passed away recently after suffering with emphysema and COPD for a couple of tough years.

Kirk lived an exceedingly long life, most of it in good health, and contributed to the lives of millions.  That's a deal nearly all of us would sign up for.
