I have some old cherry ELT-525s that I use in a desktop system paired to a set of anarchy tapped horn subs that I built. It’s a cobbled together frankensystem but still sounds good and is fun to tinker with. A long while back (over a year ago by now) I asked Danny what kind of upgrades he’d recommend for the 525s. Danny designed the original crossovers for these speakers and the components in the original crossovers were pretty good so he didn’t see a ton of need. He recommended just upgrading the caps to sonicaps, adding some no-Rez, and adding a set of the tube connectors. I thought that was a perfect, cheap way to try out upgrading speakers for the first time and went ahead and ordered.
Life got in the way for a good long while, and I just finally got a chance to complete the upgrade this weekend. I powered everything up a bit ago and I have to say I was surprised to notice a pretty clear difference in clarity, imaging, and soundstage right off the bat. Given the non-ideal room this system is in I assumed the change would be really subtle but it’s not. I’m really impressed! Looking forward to building Danny’s new studio monitors as my next project. Thanks Danny for patiently answering my questions and for the great recommendations on the upgrade.
